West Point, NY — Army West Point Junior quarterback Cale Hellums earned “Manning Star of the Week” honor following his historic week 2 performance in the Black Knights’ stunning 24-21 upset victory on the road against Kansas State.
Coming up Big in the Clutch
In his first career start for the Black Knights, Junior quarterback Cale Hellums had the performance of a lifetime. The 5’10, 205-pounder from Tomball, Texas, went on the road against “Power 4” opponent Kansas State and led his team to touchdowns at the end of both halves.
He threw a two-yard touchdown to Brady Anderson on 4th down to give Army the momentum heading into halftime, and with just 2:52 left, Hellums capped off a 14-play drive with a 14-yard run to give the Black Knights a 24-21 victory in Manhattan, Kansas.

In the second half, Hellums led his team on three 10+ play drives that resulted in two touchdowns and one field goal. It was a complete show of dominance from the cadets of West Point.
Historic Victory
The victory marked several significant milestones for Army:
- First win over a Big 12 opponent since 2006, a 27-20 victory on the road against Baylor (9/23/06)
- 2nd regular season power-four victory under Jeff Monken; First P4 win since 2016, a 21-13 victory on the road against the ACC’s Wake Forest (10/29/16)
- The Black Knights won the time of possession battle in the second half, 26:46 to 3:14.
Award Recognition
Hellums joins Bryson Daily, who was “Manning Quarterback of the Week” three times during the 2024 season (Week 6, 8, & 14), to earn Manning Star of the week accolades. The other Manning Award Stars of the Week were Steve Angeli (Syracuse), Aidan Chiles (Michigan State), Jacob Clark (Missouri State), John Mateer (Oklahoma), Beau Pribula (Missouri), Sawyer Robertson (Baylor), and Blake Shapen (Mississippi State).
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting. Since the Manning Award started recognizing Stars of the Week in 2011, 578 different quarterbacks from 136 schools have been recognized. Seventy-four players were honored during the 2024 season.
Looking Ahead
The Black Knights (1-1, 0-0) are idle this week before hosting North Texas (2-0, 0-0) in their American Conference opener on September 20 at 12:00 pm EST, which will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
