COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland’s defense continued its dominant early-season form, limiting Northern Illinois to just nine points in a hard-fought 20-9 victory Friday night at SECU Stadium. The win moved the Terrapins to 2-0 for the fourth time in five seasons while extending their nation-leading non-conference winning streak to 17 games.
Defensive Excellence Continues
Maryland’s defense has now allowed just 16 points through two games – the fewest since 2001 when the Terrapins held their first two opponents to a combined 10 points. The unit forced six punts and made crucial red zone stands to keep Northern Illinois off the scoreboard for long stretches.

“I think it’s the fewest amount of points that they’ve given up in two games since, I think, like 2001 when I was here before,” said head coach Michael Locksley. “Daniel Wingate continues to lead us on the defensive side of the ball, showing tremendous leadership.”

Wingate’s Dominant Performance
Linebacker Daniel Wingate recorded a career-high 14 tackles to lead Maryland’s defensive effort, while Trey Reddick added a career-high 11 tackles. Wingate’s leadership on the field was evident throughout the contest.
“His leadership is what really jumps out,” Locksley noted. “He’s the guy that’s kind of got the green dot on his helmet, which means he’s getting guys lined up and making the necessary calls and adjustments, and has a really good feel for what [defensive coordinator] Ted is trying to get accomplished.”

Washington’s Clutch Fourth Quarter
True freshman quarterback Malik Washington threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns, bringing his two-game total to 512 yards – the third-most by a true freshman since 2020. His most crucial throw came on 4th-and-5 in the fourth quarter, when he found Shaleak Knotts for a 42-yard touchdown strike that put the game away.
Washington’s Performance:
- 19-of-35 passing for 254 yards and 2 TDs
- 512 yards through the first two career games
- Five touchdowns to zero interceptions on the season
- Yet to be sacked through two games
“In these tough games, you’ve just gotta stay with it,” Washington said. “No matter how many possessions you get, you have to make the best of them.”
Fleming’s Continued Impact
Transfer tight end Dorian Fleming continued his strong start to the season with four catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. Fleming became the first Maryland tight end to score receiving touchdowns in each of his first two starts since Chig Okonkwo in 2021.
“I try to be a reliable target for Washington,” Fleming said. “He’s an amazing guy. I just want to be available for him at all times.”
Special Teams Shine
Maryland’s special teams unit made a crucial play in the second quarter, sniffing out a Northern Illinois fake punt attempt. The stop set up a six-play, 47-yard scoring drive capped by Washington’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Fleming.
“Big play by Caleb Webb, big play by Masai Dallone there on that pivotal time to get a stop on that fourth down with the fake punt,” Locksley said.
Overcoming Adversity
The game marked the first time this season Maryland faced significant adversity, with Northern Illinois pulling within four points after a 74-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The Terrapins responded with poise and determination.
“We faced adversity for the first time as a team together. I like the way we responded,” Locksley said. “I never felt at any point that our team panicked. When the ball goes on the ground, I saw the defense coming over and say, ‘We got you.’ And they stood up for us tall.”
Looking Ahead
Maryland will host Towson next Saturday at noon in a game that will air on Peacock. The Terrapins will look to continue their perfect start while addressing areas for improvement, particularly on third downs and in the running game.
“We don’t get style points for how we win,” Locksley emphasized. “The goal is to find a way to score one more point than our opponent. I thought we needed a game like this where we were going to be tested and play four quarters.”
