Maryland Terrapins football players celebrate a touchdown during their dominant 39-7 season-opening victory over Florida Atlantic at SECU Stadium

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland’s defense set the tone early and often, recording six interceptions and two defensive scores to power the Terrapins to a commanding 39-7 season-opening victory over Florida Atlantic at SECU Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Defensive Masterclass

The Terrapins’ defense delivered a statement performance, forcing six turnovers while holding Florida Atlantic to just 246 total yards and 13 first downs. The defensive unit outscored the Owls 9-0 in the first half through a pick-six and safety, setting the foundation for Maryland’s dominant victory.

Key Defensive Statistics:

  • Six interceptions (most since 1998)
  • Three sacks for 20 yards
  • Five fourth-down stops
  • Held FAU to 2.4 yards per rushing attempt

“It was great to see our defense play that way, but these are things that are a byproduct of what they did during training camp,” said head coach Michael Locksley. “We started off a little slow on offense, so it was great for our defense to be able to make a few plays to jump-start us.”

Freshman Quarterback Shines

True freshman Malik Washington overcame early struggles to deliver a record-breaking debut performance. After starting 1-of-8 passing, Washington settled into a rhythm and finished with 258 yards and three touchdowns on 27 completions.

Washington’s Historic Performance:

  • 27 completions (most by a Maryland true freshman in school history)
  • 258 passing yards and 3 touchdowns
  • Most touchdown passes by a true freshman in Power Conference debut since 2021
  • Zero interceptions in collegiate debut

“I think we all are starting to see the making of what could be a very good quarterback,” Locksley noted. “Malik’s a little older than his years in the way he handles things and the best part about it is he’s only going to get better.”

Defensive Heroes

Daniel Wingate led the defensive charge with 10 tackles and the game’s opening score on a 20-yard pick-six in the first quarter. The junior linebacker’s leadership was evident throughout the contest.

“Daniel Wingate’s been one of our biggest leaders and playmakers on the defensive side of the ball,” Locksley said. “He plays tough, he plays hard, he plays smart. He has a positive impact on our team in all three phases.”

Sidney Stewart recorded his first career sack for a safety in the second quarter, marking Maryland’s first safety since 2019. The freshman defensive lineman’s impact was immediate and significant.

Offensive Balance

Maryland’s offense found its rhythm in the second quarter, scoring 26 points – the team’s highest single-quarter output since 2018. Seven different receivers recorded multiple catches, showcasing the depth and versatility of the receiving corps.

Top Offensive Performers:

  • Shaleak Knotts: 5 receptions, 59 yards, 1 TD
  • Dorian Fleming: 6 receptions, 36 yards, 1 TD
  • DeJuan Williams: 54 rushing yards on 10 carries

Historic Achievements

The victory extended several impressive streaks for Maryland:

  • 14th consecutive season-opening win against non-conference opponents
  • 16th straight win over non-conference opponents (nation-leading)
  • First meeting victory over Florida Atlantic

Looking Ahead

Maryland faces a quick turnaround with Northern Illinois visiting SECU Stadium on Friday night at 7:30 PM, broadcast on Big Ten Network.

“This will be a short-lived celebration for us with a short week and Northern Illinois coming in here on Friday night,” Locksley emphasized. “I know our team’s excited to be able to get the things corrected, get back on the field this week, and put together a game plan to find a way to take care of business next Friday night.”
