The Jets finally solidified their 53-Man Roster as they prepare for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Game 1 of the 2025 season.
Florham Park, NJ- After going through multiple days to make cuts to get to the official 53 players for their NFL Roster, Head Coach Aaron Glenn has finally concluded who will suit up to start the new season and a new era of New York Jets Football under his watch. While it wasn’t easy and some will have arguments on who should’ve been released or those who should’ve stayed, these are his selections.
OFFENSE: Quarterbacks
While there was no surprise in these selections, we all knew that Justin Fields would be the starter, and Tyrod Taylor, who is coming back from a Knee Scope during preseason, will be the backup Quarterback. The battle between the third-string quarterback who was destined for the practice squad was won by Brady Cook over Adrian Martinez.
Running Backs
This is a make it or break it season for Breece Hall, as he is in his final season of his rookie contract. After showing how dynamic he’s been, there are times he has sputtered when running with the ball, but he knows what he needs to accomplish for this season. Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis are coming off their rookie season.
Kene Nwangwu will be a part of special teams as the kickoff return specialist, and Andrew Beck, who looked good as a Fullback/Tight end hybrid, shone during the preseason game at the Green Bay Packers. It feels like the running back room will finally have a purpose.
Wide Receivers
There is no doubt that Garrett Wilson was the target wideout the Jets wanted to keep as a cornerstone player for many years to come. That’s why they signed him to that long-term deal and signed his 5th year option to remain on his rookie deal as a first round pick. Allen Lazard, who is coming off a shoulder injury from preseason, will remain, along with Josh Reynolds.
The rest of the Wide Receiver room is Tyler Johnson, Arian Smith, who has improved his catching abilities and has been solid in the past three preseason games, and has used the techniques that were given to him by the coaching staff during training camp. Xavier Gipson has remained mostly for punt returns once again.
Tight Ends
Without a doubt, Mason Taylor, drafted in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, has already impressed during training camp and shown some strong catching ability. Having a father who was once in the NFL, like Jason Taylor, is helpful due to lineage and practicing with his father for a long time. Jeremy Ruckert has also survived the chopping block, remaining on the team, with Stone Smart used as the third tight end.
Offensive Line
The Tackle position will have second-year starter Olu Fashanu and rookie Tackle Armand Membou as the cornerstones of the position. These two are considered the blind side protectors for Fields, and the hope is that they can keep him upright for the majority of the season. Chuckwuma Okorafor and Max Mitchell will be the backup tackles, as Mitchell is in his final season of his rookie deal.
The guards will be fifth year Alijah Vera-Tucker and John Simpson. These two will help create the holes the running back needs, and the middle protection for the Quarterback. Many feel Simpson, the veteran, will help these young players for direction and make this offensive line better than before. Xavier Newman and Marquis Hayes are the backups.
The two Centers are Joe Tippmann and former Packer Josh Myers. While some believe Tippman should be moved to Guard, he was drafted to be a Center for a long time. Tippman did have the yips to start last season, having Aaron Rodgers behind him. This preseason, it looks like he is ready to go and helping out Justin Fields, even though he has another former teammate from Ohio State on the roster.
DEFENSE: Edge
The return of Jermaine Johnson from his Achilles rupture is a great thing to see, but the Jets will ease him back this season to build him up. Joining him is third-year edge rusher Will McDonald, who has excelled under the coaching of Aaron Glenn and his staff. Tyler Baron and Braden McGregor also join these two, and surprisingly, Michael Clemons has remained on the roster. Mostly used for Special Teams, this edge rusher has continued to show an undisciplined attitude that he needs to clean up.
Interior Defensive Lineman
Quinnen Williams will be joined by Harrison Phillips, who was traded to the Jets this season, to help stop the run and get to the quarterback. Remaining on the roster are Leonard Taylor III and winning a job from Preseason was Jay Tufele and were also traded to the Jets, Jowon Briggs, who will give a lot of help for a breather with one of the starters out on the sidelines.
Linebackers
The new Captain of the Defense is Jamien Sherwood, as he earned his new contract after taking over for C.J. Mosely in the middle of last season during an injury. Quinnen Williams’ Brother, Quincy, joins Sherwood as a powerful duo, while that third linebacker will be pitted by three different players or the backups in Francisco Mauigoa, Marcelano McCrary-Ball, and Zaire Barnes.
Cornerbacks
Former Baltimore Raven Brandon Stephens will join Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner as the Corners for the Jets. Quantez Stiggers returns for his second season and drafted from Florida State, Corner Azareye’h Thomas. While Stephens is better suited as a Safety, many believe Thomas is the future to pair with Sauce on the opposite side of the field. His length is ridiculous in intercepting passes.
The lone slot Corner is Michael Carter II, as he returns fully healthy after last season’s injury sidelined him for the rest of the season after the home game against the Denver Broncos in Week 4. His natural ability to make plays and intercept the ball will be key to having him be that extra help in special packages on third down.
SAFETY: Strong Safety
Tony Adams returns as the starter, while Isaiah Oliver will be the backup.
Free Safety
Bringing in Free Agent Andre Cisco from the Jacksonville Jaguars was a big addition to help in the secondary. Showing his skills in the final preseason game was Malachi Moore. Expect him to be a part of Special Teams and to make solid plays when his number is called.
Special Teams
Nick Folk returns as the full-time kicker, and Austin McNamara had a great preseason as the Punter. Thomas Hennessy continues as the long snapper for both situations.
These are the decisions that Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey have come together to make this team better. The hope is that they need to improve their level and put themselves into a winning season. We shall see once Week 1 begins.
