Free-to-play skateboarding franchise revival brings cross-platform multiplayer to San Vansterdam’s open world
Redwood City, CA — After more than a decade of anticipation, Electronic Arts and Full Circle have announced that the beloved skateboarding franchise will make its triumphant return with “Skate.,” launching into Early Access on September 16, 2025. The free-to-download game will be available across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC platforms, including Steam, Epic Games Store, and the EA app.
The announcement marks a significant moment for gaming’s skateboarding community, which has eagerly awaited the franchise’s return since the last mainline entry in 2010. This new iteration promises to honor the series’ legacy while introducing modern multiplayer functionality and cross-platform compatibility.
San Vansterdam: A Skater’s Paradise
The game is set in the fictional metropolis of San Vansterdam, a vibrant open-world city designed specifically for skateboarding exploration. Four distinct neighborhoods — Hedgemont, Gullcrest, Market Mile, and Brickswich — each offer unique environments and challenges that cater to different skating styles and skill levels.
From traditional skate parks and urban plazas to unconventional spots like rooftops and massive ramps, every corner of San Vansterdam has been crafted with skateable surfaces in mind. A standout location is the House of Rolling Reverence, a former church that has been transformed into a trick haven, showcasing the game’s creative approach to skateboarding venues.
Enhanced Gameplay Mechanics
At the heart of the experience lies the restored Flick-It System, the control scheme that made the original franchise famous for its intuitive yet precise skateboarding mechanics. Rebuilt using the Frostbite Engine, the system promises improved responsiveness and accuracy while maintaining the authentic feel that longtime fans remember.
“Skate. is not just a return, it’s a complete evolution of the franchise that’s built to last,” explained Mike McCartney, Executive Producer. “Our goal with skate. is to capture the freedom, creative expression, and community of skateboarding, and share it with as many people as possible.”
The game introduces several new trick types, including wallies, slappies, and firecrackers, expanding the vocabulary of moves available to players. A comprehensive resource called Skatepedia helps both newcomers and veterans master these techniques while ensuring accessibility across all skill levels.
Community-Driven Development
Full Circle has emphasized community involvement throughout the development process, incorporating player feedback from extensive playtesting sessions. This collaborative approach reflects skateboarding culture’s inherently community-focused nature.
“Community is the heart of skateboarding, and it’s the heart of Skate.,” said Jeff Seamster, Head of Creative. “From day one, we’ve aimed to create an open, welcoming space shaped by players. We’ve built this game alongside our community — listening, learning, and evolving together.”
The Early Access period will serve as an extended collaboration between developers and players, with regular content updates planned for each season. These updates will include new challenges, cosmetic items, music, world modifications, and special events.
Modern Multiplayer Features
Beyond traditional skateboarding mechanics, the game introduces several contemporary features designed to enhance social interaction. The Quick Drop system allows players to place ramps, rails, benches, and other objects anywhere in the world, enabling custom spot creation and sharing.
Rotating world map challenges, such as Line Challenges, Own The Spot, and Sessions, provide structured activities, while Throwdowns offer competitive multiplayer experiences. The new Spectate mode lets players discover ongoing sessions and use Spectaport to instantly join live gameplay.
Off-board controls give players unprecedented freedom to explore San Vansterdam on foot, climbing buildings, and discovering hidden skating spots that might otherwise remain inaccessible.
Free To Play Accessibility
The decision to make Skate. a free-to-play game represents a significant shift from the franchise’s traditional retail model. Combined with cross-platform play and cross-progression functionality, this approach aims to create the largest possible community of players.
This accessibility focus aligns with modern gaming trends while staying true to skateboarding’s inclusive culture. The game removes traditional barriers to entry, allowing anyone with compatible hardware to experience the franchise regardless of their gaming platform preference.
Looking Ahead
The September 16 Early Access launch represents just the beginning of Skate’s journey. Full Circle has committed to ongoing development based on community feedback, with regular content drops planned to keep San Vansterdam fresh and engaging.
For a franchise that helped define skateboarding in video games, this return carries significant expectations from both longtime fans and newcomers discovering digital skateboarding for the first time. The combination of classic mechanics, modern technology, and community-driven development suggests that Skate is positioned to reclaim its place as the premier skateboarding gaming experience.
The Early Access period will serve as the ultimate test of whether Full Circle has successfully balanced nostalgia with innovation, creating a game that honors the past while embracing the future of interactive skateboarding.
