Harrison Phillips wants to play for the Jets and sees the positives with them under Aaron Glenn
FLORHAM PARK, NJ.- On Monday, August 25th, newly traded Defensive Lineman Harrison Phillips met the Media to discuss coming to the Jets and how he feels he can improve this team on the defensive side of the ball. He also believes the Jets are on a positive trajectory, and he wants to make sure he is a part of that move up to bring the Jets back to where they were, and where they want to go.
“The arrow is pointing up here,” Phillips told reporters Monday. “I’m just really hopeful that I can come in and make sure that the arrow continues to point up and do whatever I can to play that part as well.”
Phillips knows how New York City Wants to Win Games
The minute a new player comes to the New York City, Northren New Jersey area either by trade, free agency or drafted, they already know what they are coming into. It’s not just being in the NFL, but to play in for the fans and in the greatest city in the world. When you become so loved and supportive for the any of the teams in any of the major sports league in this city, they know the must carry alot of wight on their shoulders. Harrison Phillips is aware of what he needs to do to have the fans to come to his side and help win games.
“I’ve just known how much this city wants to win,” he said. “I’ve known that for a long time. … You can just feel the optimism amongst the players, the staff, the new wave of people that are coming in here. I’m just really excited. Initial shock, and then once I kind of deciphered and peeled back the layers of the onion, I was like, ‘this is going to be a great opportunity.’ “
Quinnen Williams is Excited to play with Phillips
Quinnen Williams is very excited and eager to be lined up with Harrison Phillips. He has admired him from afar, last season in London the Jets played the Vikings and Quinnen knows what type of player Phillips can bring on the defensive side of the ball. In fact if those two continue to find ways to stop the run together, this defense can be back in the top ten in stopping the run.
“I was super excited,” Williams said of Phillips joining the team. “I’ve been a fan of his for a little minute. The things that he’s done at Buffalo and the things that he’s done at the Vikings with that successful defense. … I was super excited to bring him in and teach us some things, teach me some things and to help this defense be what we know it can be.”
Phillips knows there is a win-now mentality
Once he arrived at Florham Park and had his conversations with head coach Aaron Glenn, Harrison Phillips knew he would be hitting the ground running, and he would give it his all. The elite run stopper will have a familiar face with the defensive line coach, Eric Washington whom he worked in Buffalo for two seasons. That should make it easier for the new addition to work well right from the beginning.
“I would say that this is a win-now mindset,” he said. “We are a great football team. I think that’s been clear from the time that I got here and just looking up and down the roster. … Every season is completely different, and you need to find ways of how you all come together. It’s not always the most talented team that wins football games. I think it’s the most connected team that wins football games.
“A lot of those same franchise cornerstone pieces are still here. They deserve the right to say they’re ready to win.”
We have just under two weeks before the season gets underway when the Pittsburgh Steelers comes to MetLife Stadium to face the Jets at 1:00 PM Eastern, as all the eyes will be on this game when Justin Fields and Aaron Rodgers face each other to start the season.
