Sporting Jax debuts as an expansion team while defending champions Tampa Bay Sun FC begin title defense in Week 1 action

TAMPA, FL – The USL Gainbridge Super League, formerly known as the USL Super League, opens its 2025/26 season Saturday with four compelling matchups featuring eight teams ready to write new chapters in women’s professional soccer history, highlighted by expansion club Sporting Jax making its league debut at Hodges Stadium.
The opening weekend showcases the league’s growth and competitive balance, with defending champions Tampa Bay Sun FC beginning their title defense against Brooklyn FC, while six clubs feature new head coaches, and over 100 players joined teams during the offseason.
Week 1 USL Grainbridge Super League Schedule and Key Matchups
Saturday, August 23:
- Brooklyn FC vs. Tampa Bay Sun FC – 7:00 p.m. ET
- Fort Lauderdale United FC vs. Lexington SC – 7:30 p.m. ET
- Sporting Club Jacksonville vs. DC Power FC – 8:00 p.m. ET
- Dallas Trinity FC vs. Spokane Zephyr FC – 8:30 p.m. ET

Sporting Jax Makes Historic USL Debut
The evening’s most significant storyline centers on Sporting Club Jacksonville’s league debut under head coach Stacey Balaam, formerly associate head coach at Vanderbilt. The expansion club faces DC Power FC at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium, marking Jacksonville’s first top-division women’s sports team since 1982.
With ownership including Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and former Jacksonville Jaguars star Fred Taylor, Sporting Jax has generated tremendous community support, selling over 8,000 tickets for their inaugural home match.
DC Power FC, coming off a disappointing 7th-place finish (5-14-9, 24 points) last season, brings new leadership under head coach Omid Namazi as they seek to spoil Sporting Jax’s historic debut.
Champions Begin Title Defense in Newly Titled USL League
Defending champions Tampa Bay Sun FC (12-6-10, 46 points in 2024/25) travel to Brooklyn FC’s Maimonides Park in Coney Island, where the hosts have struggled historically. Brooklyn has never won at their home venue since their March 15, 2025, opener and holds a concerning 0-4-0 home record.
However, Brooklyn (10-9-9, 39 points last season) brings confidence from their perfect 2-0-2 record against Tampa Bay, having never lost to the reigning champions. The matchup features added intrigue as former Brooklyn player Mackenzie Pluck faces her old club for the first time since joining Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay enters with impressive momentum, having not been shut out in their last 18 regular-season and playoff matches while averaging 1.72 goals per game since December 14, 2024.
Coaching Carousel Creates New Dynamics
Six clubs feature new head coaches, creating tactical uncertainty and fresh approaches across the league:
- Brooklyn FC: Tomás Tengarrinha
- Dallas Trinity FC: Chris Petrucelli
- DC Power FC: Omid Namazi
- Lexington SC: Masaki Hemmi
- Spokane Zephyr FC: Josh McAllister (interim)
- Sporting JAX: Stacey Balaam
The coaching changes reflect the league’s evolution and commitment to competitive improvement, with several clubs seeking to break through after disappointing 2024/25 campaigns.
Player Movement Reshapes Competitive Balance
Over 100 players signed with USL Gainbridge Super League teams during the offseason, including 20 intra-league transfers that could significantly impact competitive balance. The most notable move saw 2024/25 Player of the Year Emina Ekić leave Spokane Zephyr FC for Lexington SC.
Sporting Jax assembled their inaugural 24-player roster entirely through new signings, creating the league’s most intriguing unknown quantity.
Individual Milestones and Active Streaks in The USL
Several players approach significant career milestones entering Week 1:
Approaching 15 Regular Season Goals:
- Allie Thornton (Dallas Trinity FC) – 13 goals
- Mia Corbin (Carolina Ascent FC) – 12 goals
Approaching 10 Regular Season Clean Sheets:
- Hope Hisey (Spokane Zephyr FC) – 9 shutouts
Spokane enters with the league’s longest active unbeaten streak at five matches (3-0-2), while four players have logged 2,520 consecutive regular-season minutes played.
Tactical Analysis: Key Matchup Breakdowns
Dallas Trinity FC vs. Spokane Zephyr FC (8:30 p.m. ET)
This clash between 3rd-place Dallas (12-9-7, 43 points) and 5th-place Spokane (11-8-9, 42 points) features the most individual star power. Dallas striker Allie Thornton, last season’s Golden Boot winner, needs just two goals to become the first player in league history to reach 15 career goals.
Spokane goalkeeper Hope Hisey, the 2024/25 Goalkeeper of the Year, stands one clean sheet away from becoming the first player to reach 10 career shutouts. The tactical battle between Dallas’s attacking prowess and Spokane’s defensive organization could set the tone for both teams’ seasons.
Spokane’s five-match unbeaten streak and 2.0 goals per game average during that span suggest offensive improvement under interim coach Josh McAllister.
Fort Lauderdale United FC vs. Lexington SC (7:30 p.m. ET)
Fort Lauderdale (4th place, 11-8-9, 42 points) hosts last-place Lexington SC (4-18-6, 18 points) in a matchup highlighting the league’s competitive gap. Fort Lauderdale holds a commanding 3-1-0 all-time record against Lexington, including a 2-0 home victory behind goals from Jasmine Hamid and Addie McCain.
The subplot involves former Fort Lauderdale players McCain and Tati Fung facing their old club for the first time since joining Lexington. McCain’s familiarity with Fort Lauderdale’s system could provide Lexington with tactical advantages.
Lexington enters on a concerning 10-match winless streak dating to March 9, 2025, creating pressure for new coach Masaki Hemmi to deliver immediate improvement.
International Success Boosts League Profile
Dallas Trinity FC’s Deb Abiodun enhanced the league’s international profile by helping Nigeria win its tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in July, defeating Morocco 3-2 in the final. Abiodun’s 229 minutes across five matches demonstrated the caliber of talent competing in the Gainbridge Super League.
Youth Movement Continues
The league’s commitment to developing young talent continues with Carolina Ascent FC’s signing of 15-year-old Stella Spitzer to a multi-year professional contract, making her the youngest player in league history to turn professional. Spitzer’s development path from Academy contract to professional status exemplifies the league’s player development model.
Discipline and Competitive Integrity
Week 1 begins with disciplinary carryover as Spokane Zephyr FC’s Thais Reiss serves a one-game suspension for her red card against Dallas Trinity FC on October 6, 2024. The suspension removes a key player from Spokane’s lineup for their season opener against the same opponent.
Season Outlook and Championship Contenders
The 2025/26 season opens with Tampa Bay Sun FC as defending champions but facing increased competition from improved rosters across the league. Dallas Trinity FC’s offensive firepower, Spokane’s defensive solidity, and Fort Lauderdale’s balanced approach create multiple championship contenders.
Sporting Jax’s expansion adds unpredictability, while coaching changes at six clubs suggest tactical evolution throughout the league.
Broadcast and Fan Engagement
The league continues expanding its media footprint with comprehensive coverage of all matches, building on growing fan engagement and corporate investment exemplified by the Gainbridge naming rights partnership.
As eight teams prepare for Saturday’s opening matches, the USL Gainbridge Super League enters its new season with enhanced stability, competitive balance, and growing recognition as a premier destination for women’s professional soccer talent.
The 2025/26 campaign begins with promise, intrigue, and the potential for breakthrough moments that could define the league’s continued evolution in the American soccer landscape.
