Eagan, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson is officially back on the practice field, marking a significant milestone in his recovery from a hamstring injury that has sidelined him since July 24.
Head Coach Kevin O’Connell announced Jefferson’s return before Monday’s training camp session, outlining a cautious approach to reintegrating the record-setting receiver into full team activities.
Gradual Return to Action
“He will begin to take part in practice. It’ll be kind of a ramp up,” O’Connell explained to media members. “You’ll see him take parts in bits and pieces of it here, but he will officially be back to work and be ramping up from here.”
Jefferson’s initial return was limited to individual drills, with the coaching staff holding him out of 7-on-7 and full team periods. Despite the restrictions, the All-Pro receiver showed promising signs as he glided through route-running exercises and handled the football with his characteristic precision.
The Vikings never intended to use Jefferson in preseason games, instead focusing their efforts on preparing him for the regular season opener against the Chicago Bears on September 8 – a primetime Monday Night Football showcase that will mark the beginning of Minnesota’s 2025 campaign.
Building Toward Week 1
O’Connell praised Jefferson’s dedication during the rehabilitation process, highlighting the receiver’s work with the medical and strength training staffs.
“He’s kind of through this period of time where we let him get his football legs back underneath him,” the head coach said. “He’s done such a good job with building his strength and doing the work with the medical team and the strength team that I think he probably feels like he’s pretty darn close and ready to go.”
With three weeks remaining until the season opener, the Vikings have structured Jefferson’s return to coincide with their training camp schedule, allowing for a methodical integration back into full team activities.
Leadership During Recovery
Throughout his absence from on-field activities, Jefferson maintained an active role in team development. The veteran receiver took on coaching responsibilities, working closely with younger players and collaborating extensively with rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
“It feels great to get back into the normal routine of being with the guys, being in the workouts, in practice and walk-throughs,” Jefferson told Twin Cities media after Monday’s session. “I’ve been itching for it, so I’m just glad I’m feeling great again and back to being with the guys.”
Jefferson’s mentorship extended beyond traditional coaching, with O’Connell utilizing the receiver’s football IQ by having him relay play calls through a walkie-talkie during early camp sessions.
Building Chemistry with New Quarterback
The recovery period provided an unexpected opportunity for Jefferson to develop a deeper understanding with McCarthy, Minnesota’s new starting quarterback.
“If I’m not going to be in that role at that time, I’m going to be the one that’s talking with him on the side to get what I’m thinking of, what he’s thinking of, just so he can be on the same page,” Jefferson explained. “Because it’s difficult to just sit here and talk and then go out there and be on the same page. It’s not going to be the same.”
The receiver emphasized the importance of mental preparation during his physical recovery, noting how the extended conversations with McCarthy helped both players understand each other’s thought processes and route concepts.
Additional Injury Updates
Jefferson’s return comes as the Vikings navigate other injury concerns within their receiving corps. Jalen Nailor is dealing with a hand injury that O’Connell classified as “week to week,” though the receiver will be able to maintain his conditioning while the injury heals.
In positive news, safety Joshua Metellus avoided long-term injury after landing awkwardly during Thursday’s joint practice with the New England Patriots. O’Connell indicated that Metellus was “working through some soreness” but expected to return to action soon.
Looking Ahead
As the Vikings prepare for their Monday Night Football season opener in Chicago, Jefferson’s return provides a significant boost to an offense that will rely heavily on the connection between their star receiver and rookie quarterback.
The gradual approach to Jefferson’s return reflects the organization’s commitment to long-term success over short-term gains, ensuring their most valuable offensive weapon is fully prepared for what promises to be a pivotal 2025 season.
With Jefferson back in the fold and continuing to build chemistry with McCarthy, the Vikings’ offensive potential appears to be reaching full strength at precisely the right moment in their preparation cycle.
