The New York Red Bulls returned home to Sports Illustrated Stadium after their late loss with an injury in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Quarterfinals to the Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park. They returned to battle once again, this Union side for another three points. This time around, they were able to finally break that long winless jinx by edging and defeating the Union by a final score of one goal to nil.
It started toward the Red Bulls’ end as the Union were awarded a penalty in the 66th minute when Tim Parker was called for a handball inside the area. Many believed the challenge by Carlos Coronel to Bruno Damiani was the initial reason for the pointing of the spot. But eventually, Damiani was going to be the spot taker, and in the 68th minute, Coronel dives to his left and makes the big save.

“Today was a long time, and to beat them today was, for me, to be honest, was special. I think it was a big challenge. Always, when you face Philly, it’s always a tough game. But today we made the three points. Yeah, for sure, like many emotions, I know you guys know my situation in the last three weeks, and to make the game today and to save it and to help my teammates, and then, for sure, I was very happy,” said Carlos Coronel

That save sparked the Red Bulls’ belief that they can finally defeat the Union. As they were attacking the far side, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting received the ball from Emil Forsberg and attacked. He made a hard diagonal low pass across the pitch, and trailing the play was the right back Dylan Neails. When he received the ball, Dylan took it one time and defeated goalkeeper Andrew Rick toward the inside of the far post, scoring his second Red Bulls goal and first in MLS League play this season in the 74th minute.

“Yes, better late than never. Only took almost 120 games, but no, it was a great performance from the boys tonight. Much, much needed win, almost a must win. Feels good to finally beat Philly. For us defensively, I think it started on Wednesday. We knew it was going to be a fight. I think Wednesday’s performance kind of carried into tonight. And yes, Tim was a huge, huge add. His experience back there helped us a lot. Great leadership and just overall great performance from everybody,” said Dylan Nealis
All match long, these two sides were battling for position and made several attacking runs at each other’s net, but didn’t have clear-cut chances due to poor shooting or solid defending. Unfortunately for the Union, their starting goalkeeper in Jamaican international Andre Blake, was subbed out of the match for Rick due to a right hamstring muscle issue in the 28th minute.

It took fifteen consecutive matches to finally break this winless streak across the MLS Regular Season, MLS Cup Playoffs, and Lamar Hunt US Open Cup combined. They had a record of four draws and 11 losses, with one of those draws occurring last season in Subaru Park, under the leadership of Sandro Schwarz in his first season as head coach.
This matchup had a feeling of a tense and drama-filled battle as both sides were fighting for those precious three points, but the Red Bulls showed they wanted more in this match, and they were finally rewarded after a stellar 90 minutes. To avoid a letdown, centerback Tim Parker showed his leadership on the back line as the veteran ran from the back of the area and led with a running header to clear the ball away to get it out of danger in second half stoppage time.
“I know that’s very important, not only for our club, for our groups, and for our supporters that we have this feeling to win against Philly. But what I can say and before the game, when we when we came out after, after the last speech in the locker room, the atmosphere was great, great before the game, that this is what we need every time, to support, to believe all together in the way how we want to play.” said Sandro schwarz “And it’s good to have these emotions every time, to create these emotions. And very emotional guy, and I also need these emotions. And of course, what I said, we are very happy to win this game. But for me, it was not the focus before the game.
“Okay, we want to change the result of Philly, because the last win was, I don’t know, six years ago. To be honest, I had this after the game. This was not my main focus, my motivation now. So for me, it was clear after Wednesday, our behavior in the locker room was, our mindset was great after this game, and we also played very well the last game on Wednesday against Philly, and then these two training sessions to prepare everything for the new challenge, the next opportunity. And this is the way how you can win against Philly like we did it today.”
Now the Red Bulls can relax and get ready for a big road match at Charlotte FC down at the Bank of America Stadium in downtown Charlotte, North Carolina. They are currently on a winning streak, and they must use this road match to fix their issues away from Sports Illustrated Stadium.
