AC Milan midfielder defends Gold Cup absence decision, calls out critics for crossing the line on national team dedication
Milan, Italy – Christian Pulisic has delivered a pointed response to former U.S. Men’s National Team players who criticized his decision to skip the CONCACAF Gold Cup, calling their comments questioning his commitment to the national team “way out of line.”
The AC Milan midfielder, speaking on the “Call It What You Want” podcast on the Golazo Network, defended his choice to prioritize rest and World Cup preparation over the regional tournament, emphasizing that while performance criticism is fair game, questioning his dedication crosses a boundary.
Drawing the Line on Criticism
“You can talk about my performances, whatever you want, but to question my commitment, especially towards the national team, in my opinion, that’s way out of line,” Pulisic stated firmly, addressing the backlash that followed his Gold Cup absence.
The 26-year-old’s decision sparked controversy among fans and former players, most notably from U.S. legend Landon Donovan, who publicly expressed frustration with players skipping the Gold Cup, saying it was “pissing me off.”
Disappointment in Former Idols
Pulisic revealed the personal impact of criticism coming from players he once idolized, adding another layer of complexity to the public dispute.
“When it comes to those guys, I don’t know, I guess it is tough because I looked up to those guys growing up,” Pulisic explained. “Some of these guys were my idols, and I respect them so much as players.”
The midfielder also highlighted what he perceives as inconsistency between private and public interactions with former players:
“It’s tough, especially when some of them, as well, even privately, the way they talk to me and clearly want to show support and be your friend and everything, and then it goes and they say something slightly different publicly.”
Strategic Decision with Pochettino
Pulisic’s absence wasn’t a unilateral decision but rather a calculated choice made in consultation with U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino and other U.S. Soccer staff members. The decision prioritized long-term preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup over short-term tournament participation.
The AC Milan star had initially hoped to participate in summer friendlies before taking his break, but Pochettino’s preference for roster consistency across both friendlies and the Gold Cup led to his complete absence.
“I wanted to play in the two recent friendlies this summer, and then take a break, but Pochettino wanted one roster for both the friendlies and the Gold Cup,” Pulisic explained.
Physical Demands and Recovery
The decision came after two consecutive grueling seasons with AC Milan, where Pulisic played at least 50 matches each campaign. The physical toll of European club football, combined with international duties, necessitated a recovery period to maintain peak performance levels.
“The way I’m feeling right now is honestly really good, and I’m excited that I’m already going to start getting back into training again this week,” Pulisic said, indicating his rest period has achieved its intended purpose.
Impact on USMNT Performance
Pulisic’s absence, along with more than 10 other key players, has been felt acutely by the national team. The U.S. has struggled in recent matches, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Turkey and a devastating 4-0 loss to Switzerland.
Despite the team’s struggles, Pulisic maintains his decision was correct for both personal and long-term national team success.
“Of course, it’s been tough, and I wish I could be there and help in any way that I can and be a part of the team, but that’s what it is,” he acknowledged.
No Regrets, Future Focus
When asked directly about potential regrets, Pulisic remained resolute in his decision-making process.
“No, I don’t regret my decision. I think it’s the right thing for me,” he stated emphatically. “I know that it’s going to put me in an amazing position leading into the next season, so I stick with my decision.”
Family Support and Public Defense
The controversy also drew Pulisic’s father, Mark, into the public discourse, who defended his son by pointing out Donovan’s own career break from the national team. This family involvement underscored the personal nature of the criticism and the need for public defense.
World Cup Preparation Priority
At the heart of Pulisic’s decision lies preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament represents the biggest opportunity for the current USMNT generation to achieve success on home soil.
The strategic rest period allows Pulisic to address specific areas of his game while ensuring he arrives at the World Cup in peak physical condition.
Looking Ahead
As Pulisic prepares to return to training and begin his new season with AC Milan, the controversy serves as a reminder of the pressures facing America’s biggest soccer star. Balancing club commitments, national team duties, and personal health remains a complex challenge for top-level players.
The midfielder’s willingness to publicly defend his decision and call out former players demonstrates his maturity and confidence in his choices, setting the stage for what he hopes will be a successful World Cup campaign on home soil.
