On Sunday, August 10th, Edge Rusher Jermaine Johnson announced that he is officially coming off the PUP List from his Instagram account and is ready to go for full contact at training camp. Since rupturing his Achilles tendon in Week 2 at the Tennessee Titans last season, it was a very long process for him to get back to where he needs to be.
Since being a first round draft choice in the 2022 NFL Draft from Florida State, Johnson has been showing improvement since his rookie year until that horrible injury. Now the plan for the Jets is to get him ready for the season, but at the same time, make sure he doesn’t reinjure his Achilles again by ramping him up slowly.
While Will McDonald and Jay Tufele have looked good at camp, having Johnson return is a refreshing sign for the front seven of the defense to have another deadly edge rusher coming in and blitzing the quarterbacks this season. To see a tandem of McDonald, Johnson, along with Tufele, and when Quinnen Williams returns from injury, will be a special thing to see.
What we saw from the last preseason game against the Packers was good, but imagine when you have all of your front seven starters back at full strength. When that happens, the hope is that this Jets defensive unit will have another solid year stopping the run and the opposition’s attack for the season. It will be a welcome sight to have Jermaine Johnson running havoc again in the 2025 season.
