Seattle shows fight, but turnovers and rebounding woes continue in 4-game skid
Las Vegas, Nev. – The Seattle Storm’s two-game road trip continued in Las Vegas, where, despite strong individual performances from rookie Dom and newcomer Brittany Sykes, they couldn’t overcome familiar issues in a narrow loss to the defending champion Las Vegas Aces.
While there were encouraging signs to build upon, moral victories won’t secure a playoff spot as the postseason rapidly approaches.
“Confidence comes with reps, and I’m getting more and reps,” Malonga said. “My coaches trust me more and more. Now when I step on the court, I just know what I can bring. I just try to do the simple things, do what I’m good at: finishing in the paint, rebounding the ball, set good screens and just do really well. I just step on the court and focus on that, and it’s working, so I just keep doing that.”
Rookie Dom Delivers Breakout Performance
Dom had her best game of her young WNBA career, leading the Storm in both scoring (22 points) and rebounding (12 boards) in just under 25 minutes of action. The double-double performance showcased why Seattle invested their first-round pick in the UConn product.
“It’s encouraging to see her role expanding,” noted a team source. “She’s starting to find her rhythm at the professional level.”
Sykes Makes Immediate Impact in Storm Debut
Brittany Sykes wasted no time making her presence felt in her Seattle debut, contributing 14 points and 6 assists in 30 minutes off the bench. After a slow offensive start, the veteran guard found her groove and provided the veteran leadership the Storm desperately needed.
“With just one practice under her belt, her explosiveness to the rim, willing to get in the paint and get to the free throw line, and she can also initiate and get us into offense,” Quinn said. “She picked up our stuff pretty quickly, and I think she’s going to continue to help us tremendously.”
Defensive Effort Couldn’t Overcome Execution Issues
The Storm’s defense, anchored by Gabby Williams and Erica Wheeler, kept the Aces off balance throughout the contest. However, Seattle failed to consistently convert turnovers and steals into points, missing crucial opportunities in the first half.
Another Comeback Falls Just Short
Seattle demonstrated remarkable resilience during their current four-game slide, battling back from a 19-point deficit to tie the game late. The Storm went on multiple runs, showcasing their fighting spirit, but ultimately couldn’t complete the comeback that would have snapped their losing streak.
Familiar Problems Prove Costly
The Storm’s loss highlighted persistent issues that have plagued them throughout the season. Seattle managed just four offensive rebounds while surrendering 14 second-chance points to Las Vegas. Despite outscoring the Aces in the paint 38-34, the Storm lost the turnover battle, committing 13 turnovers that led to 15 Aces points.
“We were sharper with our coverages on A’ja (Wilson), we were contesting, and I thought we were rebounding well in the second half,” Head Coach Noelle Quinn said of the comeback. “We were limiting them to one shot on possessions, playing a little bit faster, and obviously, the points in the paint mattered. (a 30-12 advantage for Seattle in the second half).”
Looking Ahead
The Storm will have just one practice before traveling to Los Angeles for their next opportunity to end the four-game skid and get back in the win column. With the playoff race tightening, every game becomes increasingly crucial for Seattle’s postseason aspirations.
