Alonso Martinez’s early strike was not enough as defensive lapses cost New York City FC a crucial victory
NEW YORK – New York City FC’s Leagues Cup campaign came to a crushing end Monday night at Yankee Stadium, falling 2-1 to reigning Liga MX champions Deportivo Toluca in a match that had everything on the line. Despite taking an early lead through Alonso Martinez, defensive miscues and missed opportunities condemned the Boys in Blue to another early tournament exit.
Early Promise Turns to Heartbreak
NYCFC started brightly in front of 28,000 passionate fans, creating the game’s first dangerous chance within five minutes when Maxi Moralez headed wide from close range. The hosts’ persistence paid off in the 10th minute when Martinez cut between Toluca’s defensive line and fired a perfectly placed shot into the bottom corner, assisted by Agustin Ojeda.
“What I saw was a very good start from our side when we scored the goal,” said head coach Pascal Jansen post-match. “We were good in balance with each other because there were two good teams on the pitch today, but we were slightly in favor at that moment.”
Injury Disrupts Momentum
The match’s turning point came in the 31st minute when Tayvon Gray suffered an injury, forcing an early substitution that disrupted NYCFC’s defensive structure. Toluca immediately capitalized on the reshuffled backline.
“Unfortunately, we had to make a sub in the first half with Tayvon Gray coming off, and then we had a moment of less control in that area, and we got punished for it immediately,” Jansen explained.
Toluca’s Quality Shows
The Mexican champions demonstrated their class through Alexis Vega and Helinho, who tormented NYCFC’s flanks throughout the evening. Their pressure resulted in an equalizer in the 36th minute when Jesus Angulo tapped home after Paulinho’s header struck the crossbar from Helinho’s pinpoint cross.
Just three minutes later, controversy struck when Paulinho appeared to score from an offside position. After a lengthy VAR review – operated differently than in MLS matches – the goal stood, giving Toluca a 2-1 lead that would prove decisive.
Missed Chances Haunt NYCFC
The second half saw NYCFC throw everything forward, with Jansen introducing Julian Fernandez and Hannes Wolf to spark the attack. The hosts created several golden opportunities, none more crucial than Martinez’s 70th-minute chance when his shot cannoned off the crossbar after brilliant buildup play from Wolf and Fernandez.
“We showed a lot of courage going forward, trying to make that second goal again, and we got one or two big moments in order to do that, but unfortunately, we didn’t score the goal,” reflected Jansen.
Milestone Marred by Defeat
The loss was particularly bitter as it came on the night Maxi Moralez reached 250 appearances for the club across all competitions. The Argentine playmaker, who has 133 goal contributions in his NYCFC career, deserved better on such a significant milestone.
Martinez’s goal moved him into a tie with former defender Anton Tinnerholm for eighth place in club history with 37 career goal contributions (32 goals, 5 assists).
Looking Ahead
With their Leagues Cup record standing at 3-5-3 overall and just 2-3-1 against Liga MX opposition, NYCFC must now refocus on MLS play. The team sits precariously above the playoff line with 10 regular-season matches remaining.
“Now we have 10 games left until the end of the league. We need to stay focused because we have one game less, and we need to secure a spot in the playoffs,” said midfielder Andres Perea.
Defender Kevin O’Toole echoed the sentiment: “The focus turns to MLS games, and we’ll see about the Columbus [Crew] game this weekend. That’s where our focus is now because we got some work to do to stay above the playoff line.”
