Algerian forward concludes two-year MLS stint with move to European giants

NEW YORK – New York City FC has officially transferred forward Mounsef Bakrar to Croatian champions GNK Dinamo Zagreb, marking the end of the Algerian striker’s productive two-year tenure in Major League Soccer.

The 25-year-old forward, who joined the Boys in Blue during the summer of 2023, leaves behind a solid legacy at NYCFC with 10 goals across 70 appearances in all competitions. His most memorable moment came with a crucial winner in last season’s Hudson River Derby, etching his name into club folklore.

A European Return

Bakrar’s move to Dinamo Zagreb represents a homecoming of sorts to European football, where he previously showcased his talents in Croatia with NK Istra. During his stint with the Istrian club, the Algerian international made 33 domestic appearances, netting eight goals and providing three assists.

“We would like to thank Mounsef for all his contributions during his time with the Club,” said NYCFC Sporting Director David Lee. “Mounsef brought great energy and a strong work ethic every day, and his commitment to the team was evident from the moment he arrived. We believe that a transfer back to Europe at this time is best for all parties and we wish Mounsef all the best in the next stage of his career.”

Statistical Impact at NYCFC

Mounsef Bakrar’s NYCFC Career Numbers:

  • Appearances: 70 matches (all competitions)
  • Goals: 10
  • Tenure: Summer 2023 – August 2025
  • Notable Achievement: Hudson River Derby winner

Bakrar’s goal-scoring rate of one goal every seven matches demonstrated his value as a reliable squad player who could deliver in crucial moments. His versatility across the front line provided head coach Nick Cushing with tactical flexibility throughout his time in the Bronx.

Player’s Perspective

The forward expressed gratitude for his time in New York, acknowledging the support system that helped him develop during his MLS experience.

“It’s been an incredible experience playing for New York City. I want to thank everyone at the Club for making me feel at home from day one,” Bakrar said. “I take with me wonderful memories from my time here and thank all of my teammates, staff, and fans for all the support. I’ll be following the team closely and wishing everyone all the best for the rest of the season.”

Dinamo Zagreb: A Step Up

GNK Dinamo Zagreb represents a significant opportunity for Bakrar to compete at the highest levels of European football. The Croatian giants are perennial Champions League participants and have a strong track record of developing talent for Europe’s top leagues.

Dinamo Zagreb’s Recent Achievements:

  • Croatian First League champions (multiple titles)
  • Regular Champions League participants
  • Strong European pedigree with notable continental performances

The move aligns with MLS’s growing reputation as a legitimate pathway for players seeking to advance their careers in European football. Bakrar joins a growing list of MLS alumni who have successfully transitioned back to European competitions.

NYCFC’s Transfer Strategy

This transfer reflects NYCFC’s evolving approach to squad management under the City Football Group umbrella. The club has increasingly focused on identifying players who can contribute immediately while maintaining resale value for future European moves.

Recent NYCFC Transfer Activity:

  • Strategic player acquisitions from South America
  • Development of young talent for European moves
  • Maintaining competitive squad depth in MLS

The Bakrar transfer likely provides NYCFC with transfer fee revenue that can be reinvested into new signings as the club continues building toward MLS Cup contention.

Impact on NYCFC’s Attack

Bakrar’s departure creates an opportunity for other forwards in the NYCFC system to step up. The club’s attacking depth will be tested as they navigate the remainder of the 2025 MLS season while potentially seeking replacement options in the transfer market.

Current NYCFC Forward Options:

  • Existing squad players ready for increased roles
  • Potential new signings before transfer window closes
  • Academy prospects seeking first-team opportunities

Looking Ahead

For Bakrar, the move to Dinamo Zagreb represents a chance to compete in the Champions League and showcase his abilities on European football’s biggest stage. His MLS experience has likely enhanced his physical and tactical development, making him a more complete player for the Croatian champions.

NYCFC, meanwhile, continues its pursuit of MLS Cup glory while maintaining its reputation as a club that supports player development and career advancement. The mutual respect evident in both parties’ statements suggests a positive conclusion to what has been a beneficial relationship.

What’s Next:

  • For Bakrar: Integration with Dinamo Zagreb squad and Champions League preparation
  • For NYCFC: Potential replacement signings and continued MLS playoff push
  • For MLS: Another success story of player development and European advancement

The transfer window remains active, and NYCFC supporters will be watching closely to see how the club reinvests in its attacking options as the season progresses.

Mounsef Bakrar’s journey from Algeria to Croatia via New York exemplifies the increasingly global nature of modern football, where MLS serves as both a destination and stepping stone for international talent.
