New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel provided insight into his team’s training camp progress during Monday’s press conference, sharing a memorable rookie story while addressing the transition to padded practices and evaluating key players.
The Greg Lloyd Lesson
When asked about fighting in practice, Vrabel deflected with humor before sharing a classic tale from his rookie season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The story centered around legendary linebacker Greg Lloyd, who gave Vrabel the silent treatment throughout the entire offseason.
“He didn’t say a word to me through OTAs. I’m on the defense, mind you. He didn’t say a word to me the entire offseason,” Vrabel recalled. “We go to training camp. There’s a fight with me and a tight end. I’m exhausted after practice, and I see this shadow come over me as I’m sitting in the locker room.”
Lloyd’s deep voice finally broke the silence: “Yeah, the next time you want to come up underneath the face mask.” When Vrabel questioned why Lloyd was just now speaking to him, the veteran’s response was telling: “Yeah, I just wanted to make sure you weren’t like a punk, and then I would talk to you.”
Vrabel used the anecdote to illustrate how veterans traditionally test rookies, though he acknowledged Lloyd “probably took it a little too extreme.”
Training Camp Philosophy
The Patriots coach emphasized his zero-tolerance approach to fighting in practice, drawing parallels to game situations where ejections hurt the team. Instead, he wants players to celebrate with their respective units while maintaining physicality within the rules.
“We want to be able to practice the same way we have to play, which is physical and within the rules,” Vrabel explained. “If you throw a punch, you’re going to get kicked out of the game, which is going to cost the team.”
Player Evaluations
DeMario Douglas earned particular praise from Vrabel, who highlighted the receiver’s strong camp performance. “Great energy, great demeanor, very coachable. One of our offseason award winners,” Vrabel said of “Pop” Douglas, noting his daily commitment and respect from teammates.
Hunter Henry drew comparisons to former Vrabel player Kevin Byard for his calm, confident demeanor. “He’s a very comfortable player,” Vrabel observed. “Anything that you ask him to do, it comes very easy, and he’s very instinctive and he’s got a good feel for the game.”
Defensive Coordinator Impact
Vrabel praised the return of defensive coordinator Terrell Williams, emphasizing his energy and player connection. “The players respond well to him. When he has his clips that he shows them and the things that he thinks are important as a coordinator, I think that they believe in what we want to do and our style of play.”
Looking Ahead
As the Patriots transition to padded practices, Vrabel outlined key focus areas, including red zone work, where “things happen a lot quicker” with “tighter windows.” He emphasized fundamentals like pad level, hand placement, and maintaining proper technique.
The coach also addressed the team-wide learning curve with Josh McDaniels’ offensive system, noting that having everyone learn together creates engagement and allows for modifications. “I think when something’s new, you put a little bit more time into it just so that you can get the details and you don’t maybe take things for granted.”
With training camp progressing, Vrabel’s blend of old-school wisdom and modern coaching philosophy continues shaping the Patriots’ preparation for the upcoming season.
