It took one single goal to give one side the chance to win the fifth-place match. While it looked like this one could’ve gone into extra time and possibly into a penalty kick shootout, that one moment of brilliance came up big to put one side into the lead and quickly made the referee blow her whistle to end it all as Paraguay defeated Chile by a final score a goal to nil.
No goals were scored throughout the entire 90 minutes, until they got to second half stoppage time. As four minutes were posted on the board by the fourth official, Paraguay got their chance to put themselves into the lead at the second minute of four, as Camilla Gomez was at the near side, and took the shot that crossed toward the far post, hit it and then rolled across the goal line, then hit the near post and in.
A well-taken shot by Gomez, which many thought this match would be headed for extra time, but she made sure her nation got the win and took fifth place in the Copa America Femenina tournament. Heartbreak for Chile, as they played very well, but once again, that one moment of brilliance can take you down so cruelly in this game.
While both sides did battle hard for 90 minutes, give credit to both goalkeepers, Antonia Canales of Chile and Soledad Belotto of Paraguay, who played a fantastic match in the net for their respective nations. This tournament has been interesting to watch, as all these teams battled hard to play against each other, but at the end of the day, Paraguay was a notch better and had a bit more luck on their side today.
