New York, NY– A devastating active shooter incident unfolded Monday evening at a prestigious Midtown Manhattan skyscraper housing major corporate headquarters, leaving three people critically injured and the gunman dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The attack occurred at 345 Park Avenue, a building that serves as headquarters for both Blackstone Group and the National Football League.

The Attack Unfolds

The gunman, described as wearing a bulletproof vest and business attire, entered the building armed with a rifle around 7:00 PM, according to law enforcement sources who spoke to The Post. Surveillance footage obtained exclusively shows the suspect walking calmly toward the building entrance while carrying the weapon, dressed in a blazer, button-down shirt, and dark sunglasses.

The attack began almost immediately after the gunman gained entry to the building. Witnesses on the first floor reported hearing what sounded like “a barrage of shots” that resembled “an automatic weapon” or “high-capacity weapon,” indicating the suspect was firing rapidly and indiscriminately.

Casualties and Critical Injuries

Three individuals were struck by gunfire during the rampage, with two currently listed in critical condition. Among the victims was a New York Police Department officer who was working a paid security detail inside the building at the time of the attack. The officer sustained critical injuries and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Two civilians were also wounded in the shooting, with one in critical condition and another with injuries of undetermined severity. The identities of the victims have not been released pending notification of their families, though sources indicate all three were rushed to area hospitals for emergency medical care.

The suspect ultimately barricaded himself on the 33rd floor of the building, where he was later found dead from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement sources confirmed the gunman’s death, though the exact timeline of when he took his own life remains under investigation.

Building Details and Corporate Presence

The targeted building at 345 Park Avenue stands as one of Midtown Manhattan’s most prominent corporate addresses, housing the headquarters of several major organizations. Blackstone Group, one of the world’s largest investment firms, maintains significant operations in the building, as does the National Football League, which relocated its headquarters to the location in recent years.

The choice of this particular building raises questions about whether the attack was specifically targeted at one of the corporate tenants or if the gunman selected the location for other reasons. Investigators are working to determine the suspect’s motivations and any potential connections to the building or its occupants.

Law Enforcement Response

The New York Police Department responded in force to reports of an active shooter, with multiple units converging on the scene within minutes of the first emergency calls. The building was immediately placed under lockdown as officers worked to locate and neutralize the threat.

SWAT teams and emergency medical personnel flooded the area around 345 Park Avenue, with the street cordoned off as the situation developed. The rapid response likely prevented additional casualties, though the gunman had already inflicted significant damage before law enforcement could intervene.

The presence of an NYPD officer already in the building on a paid security detail may have helped limit the scope of the attack, though the officer paid a heavy price for his proximity to the violence.

Witness Accounts

First-floor witnesses described a terrifying scene as gunshots echoed through the building’s corridors. The rapid-fire nature of the shooting suggested the gunman was using either an automatic weapon or firing a semi-automatic rifle in quick succession.

“It sounded like a barrage of shots,” one witness told reporters. “Like an automatic weapon. Like a high-capacity weapon.” The description indicates the suspect came prepared for maximum destruction, equipped with both protective gear and significant firepower.

Building occupants were forced to shelter in place as the situation unfolded, with many barricading themselves in offices and conference rooms while waiting for law enforcement to secure the premises.

Investigation Ongoing

The FBI and NYPD are conducting a joint investigation into the shooting, working to piece together the gunman’s movements leading up to the attack and determine his motivations. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from inside and outside the building, as well as examining the suspect’s background and any potential warning signs.

The choice of weapon, protective equipment, and target location suggests a level of planning that investigators will scrutinize. The fact that the gunman was dressed in business attire may have helped him blend in initially, though the rifle would have been difficult to conceal completely.

Security Implications

The attack raises serious questions about security protocols at high-profile corporate buildings in Manhattan. Despite the presence of security measures and an on-duty police officer, the gunman was able to enter the building and carry out his attack before being stopped.

Building management and corporate tenants will likely review and enhance their security procedures in response to this incident, particularly given the prominence of the companies housed at 345 Park Avenue.

Community Impact

The shooting has sent shockwaves through the Midtown Manhattan business community, where such violence is rare despite the area’s high profile and dense concentration of corporate headquarters. The incident occurred during evening hours when the building would have had reduced occupancy, potentially limiting the number of potential victims.

Local businesses and residents expressed concern about the attack, particularly given its location in one of the city’s most secure and well-monitored areas. The incident serves as a stark reminder that even the most prestigious corporate environments are not immune to acts of violence.

Hospital Updates

Medical personnel at area hospitals are working to treat the three shooting victims, with particular focus on the critically injured police officer and civilian. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed, though sources indicate both critical patients are receiving intensive care.

The third victim’s condition remains under evaluation, with medical teams assessing the severity of their injuries. All three were transported quickly from the scene, which may prove crucial to their recovery prospects.

Ongoing Developments

This is a developing story with multiple law enforcement agencies continuing their investigation. The building remains secured as investigators process the crime scene and work to understand the full scope of the attack.

Additional details about the gunman’s identity, background, and motivations are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses. The incident represents one of the most serious acts of workplace violence in Manhattan in recent years.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident or the suspect to contact the NYPD immediately. The investigation is expected to continue through the night as law enforcement works to piece together the events that led to this tragic attack.

The motive is unknown at this time. It’s too early to say if it is a lone gunman workplace violence incident or an act of terrorism.
