This current season, Major League Soccer and several clubs have decided to create throwback jerseys as the league celebrates its 30 years of existence for the game in this country. We have seen clubs create throwbacks of recent years that weren’t around back in 1996. Right now, we see the original crests of the Columbus Crew, DC United, and when FC Dallas was the Burn, while the San Jose Earthquakes were the Clash.
Somehow, those three construction men in their hard hats, the Horse with flames coming out of its mouth, and that funky-looking Scorpion as the logo are nice to see return for a short period. Of course, some fans support the New York Red Bulls, who will always clamor for the first ten seasons of this club’s existence as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars.
We will never forget from US Men’s National Team players like Goalkeeper Tony Meola, Midfielder Tab Ramos, the first Metro Legend in Giovanni Savarese, Mr. Clean Rhett Harty, and our first international superstars in former AC Milan Midfielder Roberto Donadoni, and the Smurf El Pitufo, Antony DeAvila. Then came the hard-nosed goal-scoring machine from Georgia in Clint Mathis, Marc Chung, and the first French superstar in Youri Djorkaeff.
Ever since the Red Bull Energy Drink company purchased the club back in 2006 and changed the colors and crest, it’s been all Red Bull, all the time. While they have created some jerseys with different designs to emulate the original templates of the Mighty Metro Days, for the supporters, it just hasn’t hit correctly to satisfy them.
Here is my idea: while bringing back the days of the Mighty, Mighty Metro, we need to understand that there will be some Red Bull influence on this jersey. Yes, we all would love a complete throwback, but as I always like to play devil’s advocate, we need to accept some and relent on some. But if any of you will indulge me, please take this poll and see if this would tickle your fancy.
My idea is called THE THROWBACK MERGE JERSEY:
This jersey stems from their 1996 season when they had three different styles. The full white jersey with black Trim for home games, the full black jersey with white trim on the road, but my choice is the third jersey they used once or twice at Giants Stadium that was half white and half black, with tight zigzags that merged in the middle.
On the front, you have the original MetroStars crest over your heart, while the Two Bulls meeting each other are in the middle of the jersey. On the back, just below the collar, is the secondary logo, which is the speeding taxi cab, below which will be the New York Red Bulls wordmark. A red trim for the collar, and black trim at the bottom of the sleeves
