Piastri Wins Rain-Delayed Belgian GP as Verstappen Struggles to Fourth

The 2025 Belgian Grand Prix delivered classic Spa drama as Oscar Piastri claimed his sixth victory of the season after an 80-minute rain delay, while Max Verstappen’s championship hopes took another hit with a fourth-place finish behind Charles Leclerc.

Weather Chaos Dominates Weekend

Heavy rain struck Spa-Francorchamps just 30 minutes before the scheduled start, forcing race officials to delay proceedings by nearly 80 minutes. The conditions were so treacherous that after less than a lap behind the Safety Car, Race Control red-flagged the session due to poor visibility and standing water.

“I can’t see a lot behind the Safety Car,” reported polesitter Lando Norris as drivers were forced to return to the pit lane.

After the lengthy delay and another heavy downpour, racing finally commenced on Lap 5 under bright skies, setting up one of the most dramatic opening laps of the season.

Piastri’s Masterful Lap 1 Overtake

The decisive moment came immediately after the rolling start. Despite starting second, Piastri executed a textbook overtake on teammate Norris through Eau Rouge and along the Kemmel Straight.

“I knew that Lap 1 was going to be probably my best chance of winning the race,” Piastri explained. “I got a good exit out of Turn 1 and lifted as little as I dared through Eau Rouge, and then it was enough.”

The Australian’s bold move paid dividends as he pulled away from Norris, eventually winning by 3.4 seconds to extend his championship lead to 16 points.

Verstappen’s Sprint Success Overshadowed by Race Struggles

While Verstappen had dominated Saturday’s Sprint Race with a low-downforce setup that maximized straight-line speed, Red Bull’s decision to add downforce for the anticipated wet Grand Prix backfired when the race turned largely dry.

“Yesterday was a positive result for us, but it is not a realistic result, because we are way slower,” Verstappen admitted. “Today, I tried. All in all, with the decision-making and the setup that we chose with the wing didn’t help.”

The Dutchman spent the entire 44-lap race stuck behind Leclerc’s Ferrari, unable to mount a serious challenge despite being just 1.5 seconds behind at the finish.

Red Bull’s Fundamental Issues Exposed

Verstappen was candid about Red Bull’s current limitations: “The biggest problem is still how we keep our tyres alive in the race. We’re just not strong enough on that.”

This marked a stark contrast to Red Bull’s dominant era, with Verstappen acknowledging that even a perfect scenario would have only yielded third place.

Championship Implications

The Belgian GP results have significant implications for both championships:

Constructors’ Battle

McLaren’s 1-2 finish strengthens their position in the team standings, while Red Bull’s struggles continue with only Verstappen scoring significant points.

Hamilton’s Remarkable Recovery Drive

Lewis Hamilton provided one of the race’s standout performances, climbing from a pit lane start to seventh place. The Ferrari driver was among the first to switch to slick tires, benefiting from his team’s excellent strategy calls.

“I’m happy to have come from all the way back there, recovered and got into the points,” Hamilton said. “The team did a great job as they always do throughout the weekend.”

Hamilton’s charge through the field earned him Driver of the Day honors, showcasing his racecraft despite Ferrari’s mixed weekend performance.

Mercedes’ Concerning Step Backwards

George Russell’s fifth-place finish masked deeper concerns for Mercedes, with the Briton admitting the team had taken “a big step backwards” at Spa.

“All of my laps were strong, but it’s clear that, as a team, we’ve taken a big step backwards this weekend. We don’t really know why,” Russell explained.

Teammate Kimi Antonelli endured another difficult weekend, finishing 16th and extending his challenging run of results. The Italian acknowledged the team’s struggles while remaining optimistic about improvements.

Race Strategy and Tire Management

The crossover from intermediate to slick tires proved crucial, with most drivers switching to medium compounds around Lap 12. Piastri’s tire management was exemplary, as he maintained his lead despite concerns about degradation in the final laps.

Norris opted for hard tires during his pit stop, hoping to gain a strategic advantage, but a slow tire change and Piastri’s superior pace management kept the Australian ahead.

Looking Ahead: Hungarian Grand Prix

F1 moves directly to Budapest for the Hungarian Grand Prix (August 1-3), a venue that holds special significance for Piastri, as it was the scene of his debut victory in 2024.

“It’s going to be exciting to go back,” Piastri said. “It’s a track I enjoy and scene of my first win last year, so looking forward to getting back and hopefully we can continue the momentum.”

Key Takeaways for Red Bull

Red Bull faces several critical challenges heading to Hungary:

  1. Tire Management: Fundamental issues with tire degradation remain unresolved
  2. Setup Philosophy: Balance between wet and dry performance needs refinement
  3. Championship Reality: Accepting their current limitations while pushing for improvements

McLaren’s Momentum

McLaren’s dominant weekend at Spa demonstrates their current superiority:

  • Superior race pace in all conditions
  • Excellent strategic execution
  • Both drivers performing at peak level

Final Race Results

  1. Oscar Piastri (McLaren) – Winner
  2. Lando Norris (McLaren) – +3.4s
  3. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) – +20.0s
  4. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – +21.5s
  5. George Russell (Mercedes) – +42.8s
  6. Alexander Albon (Williams)
  7. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari)
  8. Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls)
  9. Gabriel Bortoleto (Kick Sauber)
  10. Pierre Gasly (Alpine)

Conclusion

The Belgian Grand Prix showcased both the unpredictability of Formula 1 and the current competitive landscape. While weather delays added drama, Piastri’s commanding victory and championship lead extension highlight McLaren’s current dominance.

For Verstappen and Red Bull, the weekend exposed fundamental issues that go beyond setup choices. With the championship slipping away, Red Bull must find solutions quickly or risk their first winless season in years.

As F1 heads to Hungary, all eyes will be on whether McLaren can maintain their momentum and if Red Bull can find answers to their mounting challenges. The championship fight remains alive, but McLaren’s current form suggests they’re the team to beat.
