Wednesday, July 23rd, was the first training camp day for the New York Jets at One Jets Drive in Florham Park. The excitement of the players getting ready for a brand-new season as they get ready to see who can surprise the coaching staff and make the 53-man roster or practice squad roster for the 2025 season. But already there seems to be a bit of a change in one particular person.
Head Coach Aaron Glenn, who came to the podium for the first time to meet the media at training camp, looked calm, excited, jubilant, and smiled as he finally let his guard down. From his introductory press conference to the NFL Winter meetings and OTA’s he had that demanding mentality, talking to the media and right away deflecting any extremely probing questions the New York media had for him.
Finally, it looks like he has loosened up and had a smile on his face answering questions, talking about his players like Garrett Wilson, Michael Clemons, and many others during the media scrum outside on the practice field and under the tent. Of course, he had some positive comments to say about Jets owner Robert “Woody” Johnson, but he also got down to serious answers on some of the players.
Especially talking about Clemons who Glenn believes he is still a serviceable Pass Rusher, but he also informed Clemons that he needs to clean up his penalties that he kept getting tagged for with no thought whatsoever. While this is Clemons’ last year on his rookie contract, it feels like this is a make-or-break season for him to remain with the Jets.
On Garrett Wilson, Glenn was very impressed with how elusive he can be, changing speeds in the blink of an eye to gain separation to make the catch and to make the plays to get inside the end zone. With that amazing jump man, Michael Jordan silhouette touchdown grab he made on Thursday Night Football against the Houston Texans, you can see why Glenn wanted to have him remain with the Jets.
When the regular season begins, Glenn will be back to business as usual, but right now, we can see that he is human, as he has finally allowed himself to have his guard down and be himself. While he is a rookie head coach, it feels like he has taken the knowledge from his past predecessors and laid down the law of the land. A quiet offseason is a positive one to get started on the right foot.
