New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel officially opened the 2025 training camp Tuesday, welcoming veterans to Foxborough while providing crucial updates on player availability and setting clear expectations for the month ahead.
Diggs Cleared, Key Players Return
The biggest news from Vrabel’s opening press conference was confirmation that wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been medically cleared to practice, just eight months after ACL surgery. Diggs passed his physical and will participate without restrictions when he takes the field.
“I think it’s just a testament to how hard he worked,” Vrabel said of Diggs’ recovery. “When he practices, when he took the rep, it was full go.”
Safety Marcus Epps, who underwent similar ACL surgery, has also been cleared and participated in early practices with the rookie group.
Roster Management and Injury Updates
Vrabel outlined the team’s current roster situation, with several players beginning camp on specialized lists:
PUP List (Physically Unable to Perform):
- TE Austin Hooper
- WR Mack Hollins
- OL Vederian Lowe
- LB Jahlani Tavai (expected back Wednesday)
NFL List (Non-Football Injury):
- CB Carlton Davis III (expected back Wednesday)
- S Josh Minkins (few more days)
- CB Jeremiah Webb (expected back Wednesday)
Defensive Coordinator Returns
Defensive coordinator Terrell Williams is back with the team after his absence, drawing enthusiasm from both players and the coaching staff. Vrabel praised Williams’ impact across the organization.
“He’s the only D-line coach that I’ve had,” Vrabel said. “Just a great reach to every player on the football team. I think our players have always responded very well, and his units have always been prepared and productive.”
Three-Pillar Training Camp Philosophy
Vrabel outlined three core objectives for the month-long camp:
- Build a Team: Bringing together special teams units and various personnel groupings
- Earn Roles: Individual players must prove their value through competition
- Prepare to Win: Developing game-ready skills and situational awareness
“There are multiple levels of what that role will be, and it’s up to them to earn it,” Vrabel explained, drawing from his 14-year playing career that included various roles from special teams to veteran leadership.
Elevated Expectations Across the Board
When asked about increased expectations for quarterback Drake Maye and cornerback Christian Gonzalez, Vrabel emphasized his high standards for the entire roster.
“I would hopefully view everybody in that lens,” Vrabel said. “Expectations in the National Football League are high. They should be. That’s what our job is.”
The coach stressed the balance between individual development and team success, noting that players must understand how personal growth aligns with team objectives.
Practice Philosophy and Competition
Vrabel detailed his approach to maximizing limited practice time while maintaining player safety. The team will incorporate walkthrough sessions, competitive drills, and situational work without excessive contact.
“We try to practice with an energy. There’s an urgency to the way that we practice,” Vrabel explained. “We don’t sit there and spend a whole lot of time. We’re back in the huddle; that’s how a game goes.”
The coach expressed particular excitement about discovering hidden gems once padded practices begin, noting that every year brings surprise performers who excel in contact situations.
Progress Assessment
Reflecting on the team’s development since his January arrival, Vrabel indicated measurable progress in players’ understanding of situational football.
“We’re closer than where we were in March or April when we got here,” he said. “I think the players are starting to understand – we talk about the good, the bad, and the [expletive] that gets you beat, and I think that they can tell the difference between those three now.”
As the Patriots begin their 66th training camp, Vrabel’s message emphasized competition, preparation, and the relentless pursuit of improvement that will define their 2025 season preparation.
