Atlas Delivers Stunning Comeback Victory Against Puebla

In the standout match of Liga BBVA MX matchday, Atlas secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Puebla at Estadio Cuauhtémoc, marking an entertaining back-and-forth encounter that showcased contrasting tactical approaches.

Tactical Breakdown: High-Pressing vs. Counter-Attack

Atlas employed an aggressive high-pressing system that disrupted Puebla’s build-up play throughout the match. Their 4-3-3 formation allowed for quick transitions and numerical superiority in the final third, particularly evident in Gaddi Aguirre’s opening goal in the 24th minute.

“We knew Puebla would try to control the tempo at home, so we decided to press high and force them into mistakes,” said Atlas’s tactical analyst post-match. “The players executed the game plan perfectly, especially in those crucial moments.”

Puebla responded with a more direct approach, utilizing long balls to bypass Atlas’s press. Eduardo Lozano’s equalizer in the 29th minute came from exactly this type of play – a quick transition that caught Atlas’s defense out of position.

Second Half: Tactical Adjustments Prove Decisive

The second half saw Atlas make crucial adjustments, dropping their defensive line deeper to prevent Puebla’s counter-attacks while maintaining their attacking intensity. Jose Lozano’s 51st-minute goal exemplified this approach, as Atlas patiently built up play before finding space in Puebla’s defensive third.

“In the second half, we were more clinical with our chances,” noted Atlas wing-back Jose Lozano. “The coach told us to be patient, and the opportunities would come. When Aldo scored the third goal, we thought we had it sealed.”

Adrián Mora’s 71st-minute strike appeared to settle the contest, but Puebla’s tactical switch to a more attacking 3-4-3 formation in the final twenty minutes nearly paid dividends. Edgar Guerra’s 85th-minute goal exposed Atlas’s tendency to sit back with a lead.

“We never gave up,” said Puebla’s Edgar Guerra. “The fans deserved us to fight until the end. We created enough chances to get the draw, but sometimes football is cruel.”

América and FC Juárez Share Points in Balanced Encounter

At Estadio Olímpico Benito Juárez, América and FC Juárez played out an entertaining 1-1 draw that highlighted the tactical evolution of both teams under their respective coaches.

Tactical Chess Match in the Desert

América dominated possession in the first half with their trademark 4-2-3-1 formation, utilizing quick passing combinations to break down FC Juárez’s compact 5-4-1 defensive structure. Alejandro Zendejas’s 39th-minute opener came from a perfectly executed set-piece routine that caught the home defense off guard.

“We worked on that set piece all week,” revealed Phelipe Leal, América’s assistant coach. “Zendejas has that quality to find space in the box, and the delivery was perfect.”

FC Juárez’s tactical approach centered on defensive solidity and quick counter-attacks, a strategy that seemed destined to fail until América’s numerical disadvantage changed the game’s complexion.

Ten-Man Drama Changes Everything

The match’s turning point came in the 70th minute when Érick Sánchez received his marching orders for a second yellow card, forcing América into damage control mode.

“The red card changed everything,” admitted América’s captain Érick Sánchez. “We had to reorganize quickly and focus on keeping our shape. Credit to Juárez for taking advantage of the situation.”

FC Juárez immediately switched to a more attacking 4-3-3 formation, pushing their wing-backs higher and creating overloads in wide areas. This tactical shift paid dividends when Rodolfo Pizarro (former Inter Miami) found the equalizer in the 80th minute.

“When they went down to ten men, we knew we had to be brave,” said Martin Varini, FC Juárez coach. “The players showed great character to push forward and get the goal we deserved.”

Tijuana Edges Querétaro in Tight Defensive Battle

Club Tijuana secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Querétaro at Estadio Caliente, showcasing a masterclass in defensive organization and tactical discipline.

Defensive Masterclass at Estadio Caliente

Both teams employed ultra-defensive setups, with Tijuana’s 5-3-2 formation perfectly neutralizing Querétaro’s attacking threats. The match featured the lowest expected goals (xG) total of the matchday, highlighting the defensive emphasis from both sides.

“We knew it would be a tight game,” explained Sebastián Abreu,Tijuana’s Manager. “Querétaro are well-organized, so we had to be patient and wait for our moment. Sometimes one chance is enough.”

The decisive moment came from a set-piece situation, with Omar Mendoza’s unfortunate own goal in the 45th+3rd minute proving to be the difference. The goal highlighted Tijuana’s superior set-piece preparation and Querétaro’s momentary lapse in concentration.

Tactical Discipline Wins the Day

Querétaro’s attempts to equalize were consistently thwarted by Tijuana’s disciplined defensive structure. The visitors managed only three shots on target despite enjoying 52% possession, demonstrating Tijuana’s tactical superiority.

“We created chances but couldn’t finish them,” lamented Aldahir Perez, Querétaro’s striker. “Credit to Tijuana’s defense – they made it very difficult for us to find space in the final third.”

Iván Tona, Tijuana’s defensive midfielder, added: “The coach emphasized staying compact and not giving them easy chances. We executed the plan perfectly, even if the goal came from a bit of luck.”

Liga BBVA MX Standings Update and Tactical Trends

Following this matchdays results:

  • Atlas maintains their perfect record (1-0-0) with an impressive attacking display that showcased their tactical flexibility
  • Tijuana joins Atlas with a winning start (1-0-0) thanks to superior defensive organization
  • América and FC Juárez both sit at 0-1-0 after their tactically intriguing draw
  • Puebla and Querétaro will be looking to recover from early-season setbacks

Emerging Tactical Patterns

The matchday revealed several key tactical trends: high-pressing systems proving effective against possession-based teams, the continued importance of set pieces in tight matches, and the growing tactical sophistication of Liga BBVA MX coaches in making in-game adjustments.

Looking Ahead

The Liga BBVA MX continues to deliver compelling football as teams establish their early-season form. Atlas’s tactical adaptability, combined with their clinical finishing, marks them as early contenders. Meanwhile, the competitive nature of matches like América vs FC Juárez demonstrates the league’s tactical evolution and unpredictability.

“The level of tactical preparation in Liga MX continues to improve,” noted a prominent Mexican football analyst. “These matches showed that any team can beat any other on their day if they get their tactics right.”
