At 12:36 AM, Eastern, Washington Post Soccer Writer Steven Goff learned, DC United Head Coach Troy Lesense and his top assistant Zach Prince were fired by the club after their loss to Nashville SC in the Quarterfinal round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
After taking a two goals to one lead up till the halftime whistle, Nashville SC took advantage of DC United by scoring four unanswered goals in the second half, including a brace by Sam Surridge. One of them was a penalty, and a long-distance golazo from former DC United Rookie of the Year winner Andy Najar.
DC United is currently in 12th place in the Eastern Conference standings, with 21 games played, four wins, ten losses, and seven draws for 19 points. As Goff has said in his tweet, the club has come to terms with an unidentified replacement, per his sources.
After Lesense left New Mexico United in the USL Championship, he joined Gerhard Struber’s coaching staff at the New York Red Bulls until he took over as the interim head coach in the 2023 season. He continued the Red Bulls’ playoffs qualified streak after getting a win in Nashville on Decision Day with a John Tolkin Penalty, after Luquinhas was taken down inside the area in second half stoppage time.
