What an absolute masterclass from the world champions!Spain turned on the style in spectacular fashion Monday evening, dismantling Belgium 6-2 in a Women’s Euros Group B thriller that had everything – drama, goals, and a special moment for our very own NY/NJ Gotham FC striker Esther González!
The match started under challenging conditions with chilly, windswept weather replacing Switzerland’s recent heatwave, but Spain’s attacking fire soon heated things up. Alexia Putellas, the Ballon d’Or winner, reminded everyone why she’s considered one of the world’s best with a trademark thunderbolt in the 22nd minute – picking up the ball after some silky one-touch passing and absolutely hammering it into the net with that devastating left foot we’ve all come to love!
Local Connection Delivers When It Matters
But here’s where it gets exciting for us in the tri-state area – our very own Esther González stepped up when Spain needed her most! After Belgium had leveled the score at 2-2 in the 50th minute through Hannah Eurlings (following a lengthy VAR review that initially ruled the goal offside), González showed exactly why she’s been such a crucial player for NY/NJ Gotham FC in the NWSL.
Just one minute later, González restored Spain’s lead with clinical precision, marking a pivotal moment that shifted the entire momentum of the match. “We finally began to show our class,” perfectly describes what happened next – and González was right at the heart of it!
Putellas Puts on a Show
The Barcelona superstar wasn’t done with just one goal. Putellas was in absolutely scintillating form, capping off her brilliant performance with a second goal four minutes from time. Her brace helped propel Spain to the top of Group B with six points, virtually guaranteeing their spot in the knockout stages.
“I’m happy because the important thing is to win. We don’t like conceding goals. If you concede two goals, that’s something we need to correct,” Spain captain Irene Paredes said after the match. “We’ve been good, we struggled to find our rhythm, we were imprecise at the start. Once we got into the rhythm, we were at our best.”
Second Half Surge Seals the Deal
The second half was pure poetry in motion. After Aitana Bonmatí – recently returned from a health scare – came on at halftime, Spain transformed into the dominant force we know them to be. Mariona Caldentey’s fourth international goal in the 61st minute put them firmly in control, before Clàudia Pina delivered an absolutely gorgeous curled effort in the 81st minute that had the crowd on their feet.
Spain coach Montserrat Tome was thrilled with how her squad adapted: “We have a luxury of having so many options, because this allows us to create solutions depending on the moment. As for goals, I believe the activity is very high, we are generating chances, we are scoring goals, which is very good, this gives us confidence.”
What This Means Moving Forward
With this commanding victory, Spain sits pretty at the top of Group B, while Belgium finds themselves on the brink of elimination after losing their opener 1-0 to Italy. The world champions have shown they’re not just defending their title – they’re hunting for more silverware with the same hunger that made them champions.
For González and her Gotham FC teammates watching back home, this performance is a perfect reminder of the quality that makes our local league so special. Having a player who can step up on the biggest stage in women’s football is something we should all be incredibly proud of!
