Look Ahead To U.S. Men’s National Teams Match Against Saudi Arabia

New York, NY— The U.S. Men's National Team that dismantled Trinidad & Tobago 5-0 in their Gold Cup opener looked nothing like the squad that suffered embarrassing defeats to Turkiye (2-1) and Switzerland (4-0) just weeks earlier. As they prepare to face Saudi Arabia in their second group stage match, the question isn't whether this dominant performance represents genuine progress or simply the result of facing weaker opposition - it's whether this version of the USMNT can maintain consistency against a Saudi side that will test every tactical adjustment made since those pre-tournament disasters. United States Internal Turmoil Head coach Mauricio Pochettino didn't mince words heading into the Gold Cup, he stood his ground and went after Christian Pulisic who chose to miss the Friendlies and Gold Cup in order to vacation. He continued to go after Pulisic and others who are not in camp by saying he wants "Dawgs" in the locker room with "Big Balls", he doesn't want players who are scared or half in. It's hard to argue against his stance, especially with players like Diego Luna laying his body and face on the line for the flag. He broke his nose and refused to leave the match. He continued to play, and that sent a message to his coach about the American grit that this team is missing. Every successful U.S. team has had that Dawg in them, the Big Balls, the no injuries will hold us back. It is great to see players like Tillman, Luna, and Freese making the most of their minutes and on track to make the World Cup 2026 roster at this point in time. I guess we will see if Pulisic continues to hide behind his golf ball size and parents, or if he will step up and put his big boy pants on and fight for his spot on the U.S. roster. As of right now majority of the country and former players feel he should miss the World Cup 2026 in the United States due to his behavior and actions, including his father's actions. This is the second player in two cycles now whose parents stepped in to fight their adult children's battles. Neither has lived up to their hype here in the United States, and you have to wonder if they ever will. Enough about the boy who cried, and back to the team who showed up to play for their country and answered the call. The 5-0 victory was much needed for this group after the team dropped the previous four matches. Was the 5-0 win a decisive, mistake-free game? No, it was filled with errors that went unpunished. However, they stood tall and answered the bell. The overall performance was good enough to beat struggling teams and bad teams, but not good enough to compete for the World Cup. The United States needs to take what they did right and duplicate it against Saudi Arabia; it also needs to eliminate the errors they've been committing if they want to beat a better side in Saudi Arabia and higher. Look for McGlynn, Tillman, Luna, and Freese to come up big again for the United States. They're all players with huge upside and fight in them; they won't coward in the face of pressure. Jack McGlynn Factor: His early goal against Turkiye vs his role in the Trinidad rout Jack McGlynn is a young, upcoming star in the United States. He was a big part of the Philadelphia Union's success till they traded him to the Houston Dynamo. Since joining the USMNT, he has shown why he's been of high value. He has one of the deadliest crosses in the world. When he spots a teammate in the box, he hits them perfectly more often than not, creating amazing goal-scoring opportunities for his side. He put that on full display against Trinidad and Tobago. During the Turkiye game, he showed off his eye for the goal. The combo makes him unpredictable and dangerous when paired with the proper teammates. Unfortunately, opponents like the Swiss have the talent to take him out of the game and make life difficult for him. Mandatory Credit: US Men's National Team Tournament Pressure: Gold Cup expectations vs World Cup preparation balance The United States is in an awkward position; usually, this Gold Cup would mean the world to the fans and federation as it is a qualifier for the World Cup. However, since the United States is hosting the World Cup with Mexico and Canada, they don't need to win. The World Cup, on the other hand, this team is under immense pressure to prove itself; many have them being grouped, some have them lasting a single round of knockout play. So, where is the pressure then? The fans, the federation, everyone is sick of being the punching bag and sick of the children's attitudes on the Men's side. While winning is a huge pipe dream majority of the country just wants them to be competitive, and that has been a huge issue for the self-proclaimed Golden Generation. The true Golden Generation was Bradley, Dempsey, Donovan, Lalas, Wondo, Howard, and Guzan. Guys who actually competed and smashed opponents in the mouth often, regardless of what country they played for. The United States needs more Dempsey's, Bradley's and Howard's if it wants to challenge for a top-four finish at the World Cup in 2026.
