NYCFC Gets Washed Out by the Dynamo

After getting two consecutive wins, NYCFC was ready to make it three in a row as the Houston Dynamo came to the big ballpark in the Bronx. Unfortunately, the weather was not that great, and neither was NYCFC as they fell to the orange crush of the Dynamo by a final score of three goals to nil.

The opening goal came from friendly fire, as the Dynamo got the corner at the far side. Jack McGlynn delivered the ball, but was cleared out of the area. McGlynn was able to get it back from the far side, delivered another cross, but this time Justin Haak headed the ball into his own net in the 25th minute.

The Dynamo took the gift and held onto the lead till they reached halftime. But once the second half began, the Dynamo took advantage, and it was a former NYCFC player who got the job done and earned himself a brace in this match.

Ethan Bartlow brought the ball up from the far side and made a nice pass to Nico Loderio at the edge of the area. He looked toward the near side at Erik Duenas, who was inside the area. Duenas took the shot, which was saved by Matt Freese, but left the rebound to Gabriel Segal as he poked it home and didn’t celebrate against his former side in the 50th minute.

Segal would get his second goal of the match as the Dynamo were awarded a spot kick in second half stoppage time. Duane Holmes was fouled inside the NYCFC area, and the referee didn’t hesitate to point to the spot.

“Well, I think we had a poor game today. We knew Houston is a good team. Now we have to switch our mindset. We know Nashville is coming up this weekend, and we’ll try to win that match. In games like this, where there’s not much attacking play, the pressure is always going to be there. I think you have to prepare yourself for these kinds of matches—this one or any other—and you have to face them in the best way possible.” said Alonso Martinez

Jonathan Bond was able to make a strong save for the Dynamo with the clean sheet. He stopped Aiden O’Neill’s shot from 20 yards out in the 58th minute. But that’s all NYCFC could muster as they get shut out and must now ponder what could’ve been with this match.

With the bad weather on Wednesday night, was that a factor for the blue team of NYC? That would be an easy excuse to blame the weather conditions. No, no, that’s on us. That has nothing to do with the conditions. The level was poor today. We didn’t play well. A big compliment also to Houston [Dynamo FC] because they made it tough on us. They were defending very, very aggressively with a lot of bodies in the middle. We should have played a lot quicker, a lot faster, a lot more aggressively. Going for the attacks…You can see also today we didn’t create anything—nothing at all. So that is not because of the circumstances. That’s because of us.” said Head Coach Pascal Jensen
