When the Free agency Frenzy period began for the NFL, the New York Jets knew they had to make all these decisions count for the most important positions, and make sure they keep the players they have drafted who are going to remain here for the future. They did just that by bringing in several players.
Outside of signing Justin Fields and having a reunion with Garrett Wilson and Jeremy Ruckertt, it was important to find that future Inside Middle Linebacker on the defense to keep for the future when C.J. Mosley decides to retire from football.
Jamien Sherwood who was originally drafted as a Safety, but was repositioned as a Middle Linebacker, was signed to a three year 45 Million Dollar deal, and 30 Million is guaranteed. This deal was done before the free agency period began at Noon Eastern on Monday, March, 10th. Great piece of business by Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn.
With other pickups in free agency, the Jets were able to sign Baltimore Ravens Cornerback Bradon Stephens on a three year $36 Million Dollar Deal. Adding help to the Cornerback room and replacing D.J. Reed as he signed a new deal with the Detroit Lions. Now the hope is you can sign Brandon Echols to remain in that cornerback room along with Quantez Stiggers.
Safety was one of those positions in the secondary that the Jets needed to shore up as well. They signed former Jacksonville Jaguars Safety Andre Cisco to a one year deal for 10 Million dollars. A solid pick up for the Jets to fill a need during free agency.
While we are still far away from the draft in late April, the hope now is to see what else the Jets can do to free up more money, to bring in very important positions in the trenches. Two glaring needs right now are Right Tackle, Wide Receiver, and Tight End. On defense they need an run stopping defensive lineman and another Edge Rusher to join both Jermaine Johnson (Who’s coming off an ache lies tendon tear and Will McDonald.
So far, day one of Free Agency Frenzy has been a success. The hope now is the Mougey/Glenn era will have better days to fill in those positions before selecting those top college prospects for the pro game. Solid signings so far, yet we need to wait for training camp to begin and before you know it, September is here and so is the start of the new season.
