SJU Downs the Pirates of Seton Hall

The match between St. John’s University and Seton Hall University took place at Belson Stadium in Jamaica, Queens, New York. St. John’s University, also known as the Johnnies, has had a successful season so far with an overall record of 8-3-4 and a conference record of 3-1-3. However, despite their strong performance, they have missed out on some opportunities to remain undefeated due to inconsistencies in their play.

The team’s performance this season can be described as a tale of two teams within the same school. While they have shown great potential and secured several victories, they have also left points on the table in some matches. Nonetheless, they are still in a good position to secure a top 3 seed in the Big East Tournament.

In their remaining matches, the Johnnies will face the top-seeded Georgetown in Washington, D.C., and Creighton at home for Alumni Day at SJU. These matches will be crucial for the team’s standings and their chances of securing a higher seed in the Big East tournament and hopefully the NCAA Tournament.

The game started off strongly for the Johnnies, with Erik Danquah scoring just 7 minutes into the match. The Ghanaian forward found space at the top of the box and volleyed the loose ball into the first post, securing his second goal of the season and an important one for the team. This early goal proved to be the game-winner.

As the game progressed, both teams settled into a rhythm. In the 25th minute, Nigel Griffith extended St. John’s lead with a goal. The play leading up to the goal involved excellent passing and some impressive footwork. Thomas Lamaille initiated the play by driving deep into the Pirates’ box and finding Lenny Cidolit, who showcased some fancy footwork to evade a defender before setting up Griffith for the goal. This marked Griffith’s second goal of the season.

With a 2-0 lead in under 30 minutes, the Johnnies continued to dominate the game and prevent the Pirates from gaining any momentum. Despite creating numerous chances on goal, the score remained 2-0 in favor of St. John’s at halftime.

In the second half, St. John’s wasted no time in finding the net once again, scoring in the 59th minute to extend their lead to 3-0. This time, it was their star forward Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau who found the back of the net, marking his 11th goal of the season. Lenny Cidolit and Thomas Lamaille provided the assists for the goal. This goal also meant that Nicolas has now scored in back-to-back games, showcasing his consistency and impact on the team. Nicolas, a junior from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, has been a key player for the Johnnies this season.

With a comfortable lead, St. John’s went on to cruise to an easy victory, leaving no doubt about the outcome of the match. The team’s attention now turns to their upcoming game against powerhouse Georgetown University, which will take place on October 21st at 1 p.m. in Washington, D.C. This match will be a significant challenge for the Johnnies and will be closely watched by fans and supporters.
