Red Bulls Avoid Disaster Barlow Comes Up Clutch

The New York Red Bull entered tonight’s matchup with Inter Miami fighting for a playoff spot and respect. They’re trying to find consistency out of their forwards, and midfield as well, which has been hard for reasons unknown given the talent they have up front. With Dante Vanzeir back from suspension the Red Bulls can only hope that will mean more goals to come. The young Belgian star was on fire, creating chances early in the season before his suspension for actions on the field. Since his return we have seen the creativity but not many goals yet, he did find the equalizer in the U.S. Open Cup match versus FCC.

Tom Barlow, Manoel, and Burke all have been anemic this season when it comes to hitting the back of the net. It’s been so bad NY enters with a league-low 10 goals. Will tonight be the night they finally break open and score in bunches? Under Troy, we have seen a team that plays with more confidence and a loser atmosphere. For Inter Miami it’s just been a daunting year, nothing has gone right for Phil Neville and his lads. To list all the ways, they’ve struggled this season we would need a 20-page diary. The Red Bulls are a team that is vulnerable to defeat and Miami has the forwards to score in numbers when firing on all cylinders.

The match starts with a bang as Kyle Duncan in his first game back from injury commits a yellow card foul in the box in just the 5′, VAR does its checks, and we will see an early penalty kick attempt. Leonardo Campana steps up to take the attempt, he elects to go bottom right, and it’s met by Carlos Coronel for a huge early save. The teams would settle in a bit after that chaotic start to the match, neither backline would break for the remainder of the half which saw glimpses of possible brilliance, only to see it squandered instead. The first half was more forgettable than promising for the struggling sides. The biggest bright spot was the penalty kick save in the opening 10′ of play.

In the second half, we saw Troy Lesesne bring on Tom Barlow in the 46′ along with Casseres Jr, both players have had ups and downs this season especially Tom who has just 1 goal on the season after the ball found him in front of the goal 2 yards out. He has created numerous chances this season, but his problem has been finishing those chances. In the 52′ Tom Barlow finds a ball that hits the post, and he taps it into the open net to start the scoring.

It was your run-of-the-mill Tom Barlow clean-up special aisle 1 type of goal. No assist was awarded on the goal, Miami would have chances to tie the game up but unfortunately, they couldn’t find the back of the net. Even up a man late in the second half when Cam Harper picked up his second yellow card in the 90’+4′, Harper entered the match in the 57′ for Duncan who was sitting on a yellow card himself. The match would conclude in the 90’+6′ and the NY Red Bull would climb to the 11th seed while Inter Miami joins NYCFC in the basement.

New York will return to action on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Red Bull Arena for Fireworks night against Orlando City FC. It will be a battle to claim the 9th seed and final playoff spot near the midseason. The two teams are separated by just one point. To think the Red Bull not too long ago were the leagues laugh, despite having a stellar defense the offense has struggled to keep the team above water. Troy and his staff will have their hands full with the game plan for Orlando.
