In one of the most dramatic matches of the college soccer season, Molloy Women’s Soccer fell just short of an upset victory, losing 5-4 on penalties to top-seeded Mercy College after a heroic 120-minute performance that defied all expectations.
Pre-Match Adversity Sets the Stage
The Lions entered the match as heavy underdogs against the #1 team in the conference and #3 in the region, having lost their previous meeting 5-1. Their challenge became even steeper just minutes before kickoff when starting midfielder Fr. Mikaela Barriga suffered a freak injury during warmups, rolling over the ball and badly injuring her ankle.
Despite the setback, Molloy refused to let adversity define their performance. The team rallied together, ready to prove they belonged on the same field as the conference champions.
First Half: Lions Roar Against the Odds
Molloy’s game plan was executed to perfection in the opening 45 minutes. After weathering Mercy’s initial 10-minute surge, the Lions settled into their rhythm and began to frustrate the heavily favored opponents.
Graduate student Morgan Camarda delivered a masterclass performance, neutralizing Mercy captain Gr. Jessica Hoyt throughout the half. Camarda’s tenacious defending kept the lethal crosser quiet and visibly frustrated, leading to numerous unforced errors from the Mercy star. Despite enduring constant fouling, Camarda maintained her composure and avoided any disciplinary action.
In the attacking third, lethal assist leader Sarah Tappeto caused havoc for the Mercy defense, drawing fouls in dangerous areas and creating panic in their backline. The combination of Nicolich and Natalia kept constant pressure on Mercy’s defenders, never allowing them to settle into a comfortable rhythm.
The half ended with concern as Camarda took a hard foul in her defensive third, requiring attention from the medical staff at halftime.
Second Half: Battling Through Injury
Camarda returned for the second half but was noticeably affected by her injury, operating a step slower than her usual pace. Despite the limitation, she continued to break up Mercy attacks at midfield and just before the final third, though her absence from corner kick situations was felt.
Molloy’s attack remained dangerous throughout the second half, creating several quality chances that just lacked the final touch. Their best opportunity came with four minutes remaining when Tappeto delivered a perfectly placed corner kick to a wide-open attacker. However, the ball took a cruel bounce at the crucial moment, and the shot trickled just wide of the post.
Overtime Drama and Heroic Goalkeeping
With the match deadlocked after 90 minutes, both overtime periods featured non-stop action and spectacular saves from Molloy goalkeeper Shannon Kilian. The senior shot-stopper was nothing short of sensational, making three consecutive saves to deny Mercy scoring opportunities.
In the dying minutes of overtime, Kilian’s defenders threw their bodies on the line to deny Mercy’s Fr. Ancksu Dixon what appeared to be a certain winning goal, sending the match to the dreaded penalty shootout.
Penalty Heartbreak
Molloy got off to a strong start in the penalty shootout, with both Camarda and Tappeto converting their attempts. Kilian continued her heroic performance, guessing correctly on four of five Mercy penalties, but the ball just avoided her fingertips on the crucial attempts.
One of Mercy’s penalties hit under the crossbar and bounced in for the decisive goal, giving them a 5-4 victory despite Molloy’s valiant effort.
Performance Beyond Expectations
The final scoreline hardly told the story of Molloy’s remarkable performance. Playing with three players out due to injury and one battling through pain for over 75 minutes, the Lions outplayed the conference champions for 98% of the match.
Kilian finished with an incredible 10 saves, allowing no goals during regulation and overtime play. Her performance, combined with the team’s collective effort, showed that Molloy was far from the overmatched underdog many expected.
Looking Ahead
While the loss stings, particularly for the seniors and graduate students who battled so hard for a conference championship, the performance serves as a foundation for future success. The freshmen players felt the disappointment for their veteran teammates, but the experience gained from going toe-to-toe with the champions will prove invaluable.
The entire Molloy team stepped up when it mattered most, showing resilience, character, and skill that bodes well for next season. They left everything on the field and proved they can compete with anyone in the conference.
Final Thoughts
This match exemplified everything great about college soccer – heart, determination, and the refusal to accept limitations. While Mercy College advances as conference champions, Molloy Women’s Soccer earned something perhaps more valuable: the knowledge that they can compete with the best and the foundation for future championship runs.
The Lions may have fallen short on penalties, but they won something far more important – respect, confidence, and the promise of brighter days ahead.
Coverage note: It was a privilege to cover this team, even for just the latter half of the season. Next season, the goal is to provide full-season coverage as Molloy pursues their conference championship dreams and beyond.
