Austin FC secured its place in the Western Conference Finals with a thrilling 2-1 victory over FC Dallas in front of a raucous crowd at Q2 Stadium, setting up a showdown with LAFC in Los Angeles.
First Half Dominance Sets the Tone
The Texas Derby lived up to its billing from the opening whistle, with both teams engaging in physical, hard-fought soccer. Austin FC came out aggressive, looking to capitalize on their home advantage and the electric atmosphere at Q2 Stadium.
The Verde took an early shot in the 3rd minute that sailed just wide of the left post, signaling their intent to press Dallas from the start. The match remained physical throughout the opening period, with numerous fouls disrupting the flow of play.
Austin’s persistence paid off in the 26th minute when they converted their second corner kick of the sequence. The cross found M. Djitte, who struck a perfect shot into the upper 90 on the left side of the goal, sending the packed stadium into a frenzy with a 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes later, Austin doubled their advantage through a moment of individual brilliance. After Facundo Quignon was shown a yellow card for a foul, Sebastian Driussi stepped up to take the resulting free kick and buried his shot into the lower left corner, giving Austin a commanding 2-0 lead in the 29th minute.
FC Dallas nearly pulled one back before halftime when Paul Arriola unleashed a rocket toward the bottom left corner in stoppage time, but Austin goalkeeper Sebastian Stuver made a crucial diving save to preserve the two-goal advantage heading into the break.
Second Half Drama
Dallas came out with renewed energy in the second half, making an immediate substitution by bringing on F. Jara for B. Servania in the 46th minute. The tactical change nearly paid immediate dividends when Jesus Ferreira rocketed a shot just past the right post in the 48th minute.
The physical nature of the contest continued, with both teams refusing to give ground in midfield battles. Dallas kept pressing for a way back into the match, and their persistence was rewarded in the 65th minute when Alan Velasco found space and slotted his shot under the crossbar to cut Austin’s lead to 2-1.
The goal injected new life into the Dallas attack, with both teams trading dangerous chances over the following minutes. Stuver made another big save in the 70th minute to keep Austin ahead, while Dallas continued to create opportunities through Ferreira and their attacking players.
Late Drama and Final Push
The closing stages saw both teams make tactical adjustments. Austin brought on O. Wolff and Felipe Martins in the 84th minute, replacing D. Fagundez and D. Pereira to help see out the victory.
Dallas made a desperate final push in stoppage time, earning a free kick in a dangerous position in the 90th minute. Ferreira’s attempt from 20 yards sailed high over the crossbar, but Dallas continued to press until the final whistle.
Despite several late chances, including a blocked shot attempt in the 96th minute, Dallas couldn’t find the equalizer they desperately needed.
