Last-place NY/NJ Gotham FC delivered their most spirited performance in weeks, pushing fifth-place OL Reign to the limit before falling 1-0 at Red Bull Arena. The 2,274 fans in attendance witnessed a transformed Gotham side that refused to be intimidated by their higher-ranked opponents.
First Half: Gotham’s Aggressive Approach
Gotham FC came out with intensity that caught OL Reign off guard. Despite the visitors controlling midfield early, the home side created the better chances throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Midge Purce emerged as Gotham’s primary threat, consistently troubling the Reign defense. Her best opportunity came in the 15th minute when she danced around three defenders before losing her balance attempting the shot. Minutes later, a well-worked free kick found Purce 16 yards from goal, but her strike sailed over the crossbar.
The physical nature of the contest became evident when Reign striker Jordyn Huitema received a yellow card in the 25th minute, followed by a controversial moment when she went down hard in the box without drawing a foul call from the referee.
Rose Lavelle provided Reign’s best chance of the half with a 43rd-minute free kick that struck the Gotham wall, while her late effort from 19 yards required a diving save from Gotham keeper Abby Smith to preserve the scoreless tie.
Halftime Assessment
Gotham’s tactical discipline limited Reign to just three quality chances while creating six of their own. The visitors appeared frustrated on both bench and pitch, struggling to break down Gotham’s organized defensive structure.
Second Half: Rapinoe Changes Everything
Both teams emerged unchanged for the second half, with Gotham maintaining their aggressive pressing approach. The home side continued creating corners but couldn’t capitalize on their set-piece opportunities.
The match’s turning point arrived in the 56th minute when Reign introduced game-changers Megan Rapinoe and Jess Fishlock. The impact was immediate and decisive.
Rapinoe’s perfectly weighted through ball found Fishlock, whose run into the box drew a foul from Ali Krieger. The veteran stepped up to take the penalty herself, burying it confidently to give Reign the 1-0 advantage.
Reign Takes Control
Following the goal, OL Reign’s quality began to show. Rapinoe nearly doubled the lead with a thunderous 28-yard effort that sailed just over the crossbar, while the visitors controlled possession and tempo.
Gotham refused to surrender, making tactical substitutions to chase an equalizer. Jenna Bike and Taryn Torres entered for Ellie Jean and Kristie Mewis, while later changes brought on Kumi Yokoyama and Delanie Sheehan.
Desperate Final Push
The closing stages saw Gotham throw everything forward in search of an equalizer. Their best chance came in stoppage time when Yuki Kawasumi unleashed a rocket toward goal, only to be denied by a spectacular diving save from Reign goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
Looking Ahead
This performance represents significant progress for Gotham FC, who showed the fight and organization that had been missing in recent weeks. The defensive structure and attacking intent provide a foundation to build upon.
Gotham FC will look to carry this momentum into their next fixture against North Carolina Courage on September 24th at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. The match kicks off at 7:00 PM EST and will be broadcast on Paramount+ and Twitch.
The final home game of the season comes October 1st against Portland Thorns at Red Bull Arena, with kickoff set for 6:00 PM EST as Portland battles for first place.
For OL Reign, this victory keeps them in contention for a top-four finish, especially with Portland facing Louisville later that evening.
