On a raw, windswept day at The Pingry School in New Jersey — the kind where the cold cuts sideways and flags snap like rifle reports — we caught up with Army Captain Samantha “Sammy” Sullivan. A Team USA star, West Point graduate, and embodiment of leadership on and off the pitch, Sullivan stands at the intersection of service and sport with a steadiness that defines her story.
Discovering Rugby and Rising to the Top
Samantha Sullivan’s athletic journey began in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where she excelled in soccer before discovering rugby as a freshman at West Point. Despite having no prior experience, Sammy’s drive and team‑first mentality propelled her forward — by her third match, she was a starter.
Her rise didn’t stop there. She became a three‑time All‑American and captured the 2019 Prusmack Award as the nation’s top female collegiate rugby sevens player. What began as a new challenge quickly became her calling.
In addition to her collegiate and military achievements, Sammie has represented Team USA on the world’s biggest stages—competing at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town in 2022 and the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. These milestones mark her as one of the premier rugby athletes globally, proudly wearing the red, white, and blue for her country.
Serving with Pride: The Soldier‑Athlete
Balancing the dual demands of military life and elite sport, Captain Sullivan credits the Army’s World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) for making her journey possible. As she shared during our sideline interview:
“I’m really blessed to be a part of the World Class Athlete Program, which is a program in the Army that allows soldiers to compete full-time in their Olympic sport. Represent not only Team USA but the Army on the world stage, so I feel very supported by the military in playing rugby. And it’s honestly just a bonus getting to do outreach missions with the military when I do get to speak about my military experience, whether that’s with soldiers or civilians. So it’s not too hard to balance because I get support from both sides.”

Inspired by her father’s military service, Sammy commissioned as an Engineer Officer (12A) in May 2020. Today, she expertly balances being a soldier and an athlete at the highest level — proudly representing her country in both arenas.
Legacy and Leadership: Lessons from West Point
Sammy’s pride in her alma mater and her rugby legacy shines through — especially when asked about the Army‑Navy rivalry:
“Yeah, I mean, it’s the standard at this point. You know, like, I wouldn’t expect anything less from the girls. And when I was there, we beat them all four years. So just carrying on the legacy, and I’m proud of them.”

Her advice to the next generation of West Point cadets is heartfelt and hard‑earned:
“West Point can be pretty hard, especially if you make it hard on yourself, but just keep going and remember that the people to your left and right may be like your coworkers outside of West Point, so be nice to them, help each other out, and the Army is just one big team, so we all got to work together.”
Beyond the Pitch: Personality and Passions
Sammy’s leadership, humility, and approachability are as evident in person as they are on the field. She’s also known for her passion for Lego building — a hobby she shares openly with fans on social media. These dimensions make her not just a fierce competitor but a relatable and inspiring role model for athletes, cadets, and young people nationwide.
Conclusion: The Story Continues
Captain Sammie Sullivan’s story is a living example of what’s possible through service, sport, and authentic leadership. As she continues to break new ground, she remains a proud ambassador for Team USA, the Army, and the next generation of American leaders. Her journey is far from over — and the chapters ahead promise to be just as compelling as the ones she’s already written.
