Their long tenured and reliable centerback was traded to our Nation’s Capital
Harrison, NJ- The New York Red Bulls have traded Massapequa, New York Native and centerback Sean Nealis to D.C. United for General Allocation Money (GAM). A total of $350,000, with $200,000 in 2026 and then $150,000 in 2027.
Sean Nealis Red Bulls career
He was selected in the 2019 MLS Super Draft and spent six seasons with the club. He has compiled 187 appearances in all competitions, which is ranked second all-time in club history as a defender. He has scored five goals and earned seven assists in his Red Bulls career. In the 2023 season, Sean served as Captain of the Red Bulls for one season, before he surrendered the armband to Emil Forsberg in 2024.
Nealis scored the Red Bulls’ lone goal in the 2024 MLS Cup Final at the Dignity Health Sports Park against the Los Angeles Galaxy. In the 2021 season, he was a part of the backline that earned 13 clean sheets, and his first goal for the club was against FC Dallas on May 11th, 2019.
“We want to thank Sean for everything he gave to the club,” said Head of Sport Julian de Guzman. “Sean handled himself with class every day and represented the club the right way. We are grateful for his time here and wish him all the best going forward.”
Personal Thoughts
Sean Nealis was the backbone of the backline for the Red Bulls. It wasn’t just him helping the goalkeeper keep the ball out of the net; he was able to clean up any mistakes that were made inside their area. He stood his ground, and when his teammates were given a dangerous tackle, Nealis was right there to show support and let the opposition know he wouldn’t stand for that.
I hope that Director of Sport Julian DeGuzman has a suitable replacement for Sean Nealis either in the free agency market or the upcoming Winter Transfer Window. It will be very difficult to replace what Sean brings to the pitch for the club in Harrison and the New York City Tri-State Area Soccer Market.
