WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point men’s tennis didn’t just open the spring season with a win.
The Black Knights opened it with a statement.
Army closed out its first weekend of spring play Saturday at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center with a pair of victories — a 4–0 shutout of St. Bonaventure followed by a 4–1 win over Sacred Heart — to move to 3–0 on the young season. The weekend sweep came on the heels of Thursday’s season-opening win over Pratt CC, giving Army a perfect start and early momentum as the schedule ramps up.
Match 1: Army Blanks St. Bonaventure, 4–0
Army set the tone immediately in the morning match, taking control in doubles and never letting St. Bonaventure breathe.
Doubles: Quick work, early point
- At No. 1, Matias Feoli and Rudy Mazzola opened with a 6–2 win.
- At No. 2, Preston Achter and Alan Ton matched it with a 6–2 victory to clinch the doubles point and put Army up 1–0.
Singles: Clean finishes
Army carried that momentum into singles.
- Davis McDonald pushed the lead to 2–0 with a 6–0, 3–0 (ret.) win at No. 6.
- Alan Ton made it 3–0 with a dominant 6–1, 6–1 victory at No. 3.
- Rudy Mazzola closed the match with a 6–1, 6–4 win at No. 5 to secure the sweep.
Army’s ability to clinch quickly mattered — not just for the scoreboard, but for the day’s bigger challenge: turning around and doing it again in the nightcap.
Match 2: Army Responds After Dropping Doubles, Beats Sacred Heart 4–1
The second match tested Army differently.
Sacred Heart came out sharp in doubles, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 to take the opening point and a 1–0 lead.
Army’s response was immediate — and decisive.
Singles: Four straight wins to finish it
- Jackson Armistead evened the match at 1–1 with a 6–2, 6–1 win at No. 1.
- Alan Ton gave Army the lead with a 6–4, 6–0 decision at No. 2.
- Freshman Tucker Culpepper put Army on the brink with a 7–6, 6–2 win at No. 4.
- Preston Achter clinched the match at No. 6, rallying from a set down for a 2–6, 6–3, 6–3 comeback win.
That clincher was the snapshot of Army’s weekend: even when the start isn’t perfect, the finish is.
By the Weekend: What Stood Out
Army’s opening stretch showed two things that travel:
- Depth in singles — the Black Knights repeatedly turned matches with points across the lineup.
- Composure under momentum swings — twice this week, Army dropped the doubles point and still controlled the match in singles.
At 3–0, Army has built early confidence — and a standard — heading into the next slate.
